All you have to do is add a Shahada to the black flag and boom you got a flag for the Islamic State of New Zealand. If you want a black flag, you have to stick a hammer and sickle some place on it so no gets confused about your religious affiliation.

It has taken way longer than it's needed to I agree, it's not the five pages so much as the nine years it's been since I started this thread.
As for basic design principles, I can take them or leave them. Having to restrict yourself to three colours, simple geometric patterns... gets kind of boring. And let's be honest, New Zealand is a tiny insignificant country with an inferiority complex, a flag that differs from the norms makes sense to me.

The other two surprised me a little. Both black and white designs, one fern and one koru, (spiral.) The motifs and colours didn't surprise me as much as which ones they chose. I feel there were some better ones. Short of that they could have given us some variety. Either way it's given me an easy job to rank them, (which will be in the order I posted them, though I may switch around the last two.)

In the aftermath of the four-flag short list it appears one that wasn't chosen is being backed by a groundswell of support. It is called 'Red Peak' which sounds like a reference to some Soviet spy program but whatever, it's not a bad design and makes a Hell of a lot more sense as a flag than the other four.
Unfortunately it seems it's too late. The Prime Minister says it won't be added because it would involve changing the law around the flag referendums. Forgetting the fact that as Prime Minister he could do that if he wanted to. Either way it hasn't seemed to quell the support for the newcomer.
Personally I think if people want the option to vote for this design than let them. The flag consideration panel had a chance to pick four we could vote on and by all accounts they were shit at it. Why not include the one popular with the public? If it's all just a blast of noise from the social media echo chamber it won't win the first preference vote and won't matter anyway so what's the harm?
I would be happy with Red Peak and would vote for it over the colonial thing. I've read the reasoning behind it and it's solid.
Most importantly though I think this flag and the fiasco surrounding it perfectly represents New Zealand's capacity to band together to make a difference only once it's too late for it to matter.
