Tgat article got 25000 shares on FB which is a big deal. Do you have links to the other parts of the series? They don't seem to be on the jacobinPocshy2.0 wrote:
I'm not joking at all, but I lived with Luke Savage (the author) for 2 years. He's been catching shit from academics for this one for a while now. Works for Broadbent Institute now, which is basically a socialist think-tank. Cool to see people actually read his stuff.SuperJail Warden wrote:
Would anyone like to discuss an article from Jacobin magazine that is getting passed around in reference to Chris H? I know Jacobin is an openly radical and socialist publication but this post is well thought out and discusses New Atheism and its problems. Most of it has to do with Atheist vs Islam.

"New Atheism, Old Empire
The “New Atheists” have gained traction because they give intellectual cover to Western imperialism."
I will give +1 to any and all post relating to the article.
But more to the point of your post, I've talked to Luke about this article a few times, and really I think the motive and underlying philosophy is driven by a very deep seated shame for having blindly followed Chris Hitichens and Dawkins down the new-atheist path for the better part of his adolescence. He thought harder and realized how it was shaping his view of the world, and wrote a series of pieces about it. This is the best one by far, and captures most of his thought nicely.
Unfortunately no, not readily. I don't know that some of the articles in the series he wrote ever got published anywhere. Here is his wordpress and CV if you are interested in his stuff. They all loosely deal with the same issues, you'll come to find: https://lukesavage.wordpress.com/selected-publications/SuperJail Warden wrote:

EDIT - I was able to read the early versions of some of the articles related to new atheism, so maybe they got morphed into something else after I had seen them? I honestly don't know. I recall 2 other shorter articles on the topic, anyways.
EDIT 2 - Luke was just on Facebook and I asked him about the other articles. They never got published because he felt they were too similar to New Atheism, Old Empire and that the shorter articles would draw attention away from the arguments made there. He scrapped them after showing them to a few friends.

Thanks for the update. I'm going to take a look at his article about Toronto and NYC. He needs to just pay the $5 a month fee for a domain name and hosting though. It never looks good to have a .wordpress.com domain on anything.
At least it might be an antidote to the Rand crowd - why does everyone have to pick a dogma though?Pocshy2.0 wrote:
I completely agree. Talking to Luke or his group of like-minded socialist friends is actually rather boring the 5th time around. Over beers we'd have the same conversations on a 3 topic rotation. The need to relate everything to class struggles and wealth inequality is just really tiring.

Classy.

Iranian news outlets reported the police directive Friday warning retailers against promoting "decadent Western culture through Valentine's Day rituals." Police informed Tehran's coffee and ice cream shops trade union to avoid any gatherings in which boys and girls exchange Valentine's Day gifts.
The annual Feb. 14 homage to romance, which tradition says is named after an early Christian martyr, has become popular in recent years in Iran and other Middle East countries.
The backlash in the Islamic Republic is part of a drive against the spread of Western culture.
Saudi Arabia has also sought to stamp out Valentine's Day but it's celebrated widely in nearby places like Dubai.
What an awful religious culture they have.
Stumbled upon some pretty cringe-worthy comments. Adding site to blacklist.

I'm pretty sure that site came about hand in hand with Glenn Beck's heyday.

Santa was created by proto-communists -primitive liberals- in order to indoctrinate our children with the fundamentals of Communism. He wears red, gives away free toys, and has a beard that resembles Karl Marx. The fact that the popular media has embraced him so much and made him a symbol of the commercialization of Christmas is in fact a mockery of the God-given system of Capitalism past down from the Lord himself throughout our generations. It also proves that our media is being controlled by leftist Jewish conspirators.
However, his resemblance to the beast of Revelations is not coincidental. The New World Order will most likely be liberal in nature (why else would they want to eradicated Christians?). It is therefore that we do our duty as Christians and eliminate everything that represent this unholy symbol. I urge you all to go to your nearest shopping district and neutralize any elderly, obese men trying to seduce our innocent children into the dark leftist conspiracy. Send them back to the fires of hell from whence they came.

Looked again. Satire site. But the mere fact that so much ISN'T made it totally plausible.
It bothers me that the media keeps referring to Mohammed Ali as Muslim. He was part of the Nation of Islam. That is not a real sect of Islam. It is a prison cult.

normally when you say things like that it's pure bait but in this case i think you're probably about right.
Ali hasn't been a member of the Nation of Islam since the '70s, but sure
This^ he left the Nation of Islam and became a "proper" Muslim.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

mormonism is a prison cult too. not like that koresh thing in waco, or the jonestown thing in guyana. mormons hope you donate a percentage to the 'church' while on earth to collect your reward in heaven.SuperJail Warden wrote:

i figure i was mormon for awhile and i want one of my virgins to be macbeth. i cannot thank my god enough to lead me to a website so full of virgins, it's a sign. i want a warman too just to calibrate my homophobia. if he screams when the time comes i'll chalk it up to homeschooling first, and then realize that he could outttrun everyone at home.
I think you need to go talk to your bishop, burnzy.
i think you need to understand that, between you and ATG, and me not being a mormon, you need to go fuck yourself.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Jesus wept, imma get banned again because a fucktard moderator calls me mormon and when i defend myself against baseless attacks, well, moderators win amirite?
i'm not LDS, you are a sphincter, and mormonism is a cult. Koresh and Waco had nothing on what Missouri and mormonism will be when the seniles downtown proclaim the "end of times" to be, when the fuckers leave here and kill their way into Jackson county.
why is your head so far up your ass that that the AMA recognizes you to be the first first person colonoscopy expert? is it because your fixation on plural marriage and the fact you can't get a female to acknowledge you letting you down? Or is it the fact that you can't come out and be a priesthood holder the root of your angst?
n00b, i don't really care if you*re a reformed gay that wants 72 virgins, stop slandering me with claims i'm a cult member.
ban me with your petty little hands, but i will drive back to Tacoma and interview your bishop and tell him you are a prime candidate for mormon philosophizing if you continue these unwarranted attacks on my religious beliefs.
I love how much burnzz hates Mormons. the whole thing looks fucking backshit insane across the Atlantic.

Mormons and Muslims have a lot in common. They both treat women awfully and would commit suicide bombings and terrorism if pressured to. I would not at all be surprised to hear about a Mormon suicide bomber one day.
An explosive belly bag full of friendly pamphlets and confetti maybe.
They are religious extremist. We may one day have to monitor them.

They harbor some religious extremism, sure. No coincidence many of the Bundy supporters, three percenters and other "don't tread on me federal government" folk are adherents of some form of Mormonism. Pretty silly to put them in the same boat as islamic fundamentalists.
Dogs and humans have a lot in common too. They both have 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose and teeth.
This is fun! I like associations.

They are alike in more way than they are different. They both practice polygamy, are prone to violence, and have weird beliefs regarding the afterlife. They were both founded by violent men. Both seek to dominate the political system they are a part of.
It is pretty ibvious to anyone with 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose and teeth. Mormons are the Christian equivalent of Fundamentalist Muslims.
