They genuinely are. Or genuinely disregard facts that don't agree with their ideas because it makes them feel better.

Articles online keep talking about how Trump supporters are blue collar workers without degrees who were "left behind". I deal with these people everyday and I have to say I have very little sympathy for them. The older ones had every opportunity to get educations and chose not to. Their incomes are still above average. I don't get what they are so upset about.

Economic equality is the highest it's ever been.  Law of Increasing Poverty.  Post your Marx reader again.

Politicians keep talking about syrians and islam and terror and people see all the attacks around the world and are frightened.  I think you've mentioned Goring before, so you should be familiar with this concept as a means of control/consent.

They're above average income because of their union. Other union workers have lost their jobs and NAFTA is always blamed. Trump wants to tear up NAFTA. This isn't that hard to connect.

My job isn't unionized and I work for a Japanese company. Our jobs can't be exported to Mexico. NAFTA has no effect on us except in a positive way as it does with most of the country.

There is something about Trump's aggressive ignorance that appeals to these people and I don't understand it.

"Blue-collar resentment" is often oversimplified to emotional appeal by both detractors and sympathizers. People are still licking wounds sustained from the great recession and zombie economy.

They're the same types of people that complain about "cheap, chinese made crap" when it's an American product, designed by Americans to fail after x uses, but using Chinese labor to minimize labor costs. I had a whole course on it in engineering school on the principle of value engineering. It's profit maximization based on the gilette disposable razor model.

Refuses?? You honestly believe you have any right to marry a women they have any obligation to get married because of a pregnancy?

Marriage is a completely different issue to pregnancy and parenting and you don't refuse to get married, you agree to. Maybe it's just your poor choice of words, but holy shit you make it sound draconian.
I was trying to word it as simple as possible, so yeah I see what you mean. Still, there has to be something done and at least what I put down is some degree of progress towards more gender equality, obviously it needs work.

Warman I was actually responding to dilbert with the comment about lies and deceit.  My bad for not quoting him directly.

Your men's rights issue is simple - you know when you blast your load into a girl that there is a chance of pregnancy.  Don't do it and you don't have to worry about your male rights being trampled on in order for a woman to make a decision about her body/future.

So is Trump in freefall at the moment? Nate Silver's lot are giving him around a 30% chance of winning at the moment and that's with a projection that suggest he's actually going to improve his position from now until November.

He got a mediocre bounce after the Republican convention which Clinton easily matched and is expected to exceed. On top of that he has had a pretty poor week or so since. I don't know what made him think attacking the Kahn family was a good idea. Why did he need to try and suggest had "sacrificed" things too? How could he then go on to suggest paying employees constitutes a sacrifice? And a sacrifice equal to losing a son! And throw in a bit of racism by suggesting that Ghazala Khan was prevented from speaking because of the idea that Muslims don't allow their women to speak. Stupid stupid stupid stupid. Why doesn't he have the temperament to just let it go? He didn't need to respond. Did he seriously think anyone would take kindly to him trying to pick a fight with the family of a dead US soldier?

All indications are that he's going to carry on with what proved successful during the Republican primary. But the middle ground isn't going to be pulled over to supporting him by liberal use of insults and hyperbole. Maybe they'll be persuaded by a solid fear campaign but even that has its limits. Meanwhile I think even his supporters are waiting to see what else he has and I doubt many are impressed.

There's a need for him to turn things around pretty quickly but I'm still hopeful that we're about to see the most embarrassingly disastrous presidential campaign ever.

He's not so much in freefall as he's doing as poorly as always. It seems like he's right there because the media talks so much about him and he's so outrageous that he headlines news day in and day out, but he's not actually that close to winning atm.

He's so outside the party that he says and does whatever he wants. While some see that as a positive, it makes it really hard to wrangle him in and really easy to egg him on. Any democrat with his/her weight in salt can set him off by suggesting he will or wont do something which will only result in him proving he can or can't. He's like a 15 year old that way. Plenty of face-palms from inside the republican party have occurred and plenty more will come before November.

There'll be some ups and downs for both in the next 3 months but in the end my guess he Hillary wins 58-42

I feel a 16 point lead is a little too high for Hillary, no one likes her either. The differences I'd say be more in the 4-6 point range at the most.

Donald Trump’s spokeswoman blamed the policies of President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for the death of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, despite the fact that Khan died in 2004.

“It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagement that probably cost his life,” spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said in an interview Tuesday with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer.

Khan died during the presidency of George W. Bush, while Obama was a state senator in Illinois.

A lot of people will hear the story this woman is spinning is and believe it to be truthful. Can someone explain why? Are Trump voters just genuinely stupid?
Trump voters don't trust the "mainstream media" and won't see the other side of it. I'm frankly tired of the incessant "look how awful trump is today!" articles myself and I'm not even voting for the guy.

(But that's my fault for having Slate and Business Insider in my rss feed )
a special sort of stupidity reigns when people distrust 'the media' but then have hope in a reality tv persona.

That'd be about right War Man if you're talking about the popular vote. Electoral vote though Pirana's got it right and that's the one that really matters.

You're right, but he's not "the media" per se, he's a reality star.

The National Review had a good article today on the conservative echo chamber: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/4 … servatives and, as they point out, a lot of it has to do with the blatant bias in most media sources turning people who lean conservative away. They point out that social media driven content tends to be overwhelmingly liberal, but personally, I feel that has more to do with the sweatshop wages that only a just-out-of-school journalist would accept. Youth = Liberal by default.

novel thesis. the media is liberal at all levels, though, not just the interns running shit listicle websites and haranguing twitter opinion pieces.

education correlates with liberal beliefs. well-educated metropolitan elites on both coasts comprise most of your 'national' media.

meanwhile middle america sits back and watches the apprentice and duck dynasty.

both are 'the media' as a cultural institution. one is the educated professional aspect and the other is lowest common denominator's entertainment.

Education correlates with liberal beliefs because academics are liberal, not necessarily because their opinions are factual.

All major American media institutions are conservative. MSNBC may talk about higher taxes on the wealthy but you will never hear them suggest worker ownership over corporations or suggest corporations be nationalized for the good and profit of the public.

Most workers only want ownership of companies that's already successful. Try recruiting people at the start up level and paying them with paper clips and shares.

If people want ownership of their companies, they can buy shares if they want (if it's publicly traded).
