Its better than having laws which force everyone to remain silent and kow-tow to the bigots as they impose their indoctrinated views on the general population.

There's the example of the new muslim mayor of London banning pictures of women in bikinis from advertising on the tube.
Is it because he's a muslim and representing his power base or is he responding to actual public demand? Who knows, but good luck to anyone who tries to say anything about it.
So what if either is right, don't companies have the right to advertise using pictures of people wearing clothes? If bigots are offended isn't the problem with them?

i think i prefer the society where religion is mostly an irrelevance.

your point about the cross being worn in schools is irrelevant, by the way. they updated it so that it cannot be conspicuously displayed. the idea isn't to batter muslims for being different: it's for everyone to be the same. as for secular nations still celebrating christian holidays... wow, great point. never thought of this before. it's almost like our bank holidays have pagan origins, too. maybe money really is mammon? aaaah my head!!!

My tolerance for Muslim practices has it's limits though. I am 100% okay with hijabs. I would be okay with Burkas and Niqabs being banned. Those could stay right in the middle east.

jay my point wasn't there are more muslims in the UK than the US. that was not my argument. well done. my point was that they are integrated and identify themselves as british. the idea that the US is friendlier to muslims than the UK/europe is a dumb one. especially based on france's enforced secularism.

Do they consider themselves to be British though? Or do they consider themselves British of Pakistani origin?

We've become very bad at assimilation in the past seventy years or so. No one is American anymore. They're Native American or Mexican-American or African-American or European-American or Asian-American or yes, Muslim-American. When I was a kid we were taught the "melting pot" story of American assimilation and integration in social studies class. Now it's considered racist and nativist.

I'm not a fan of nationalism in theory due the well known downsides... but I believe we're really fucking up our country by replacing it with identity politics that singles out individual groups of people and sets them apart, even if it's being done to emphasize the good parts of their inherent cultures.

I would say the overwhelming majority of British Pakistanis and so forth consider the British part to be a major part of their identity, yes. which is what I was addressing to Macbeth with his "Muslims have it terrible in Europe" stuff. on the same token, so many post colonial subjects are proud to identify France as their mother nation. it's easy to single out the radical examples.

Major part of their identity - yes but they are still Pakistanis first.

Historically in the early days people had no choice but to assimilate, now they can migrate to an ethnic ghetto and never speak a word of English in their lives if they choose not to, let alone assimilate. Govt departments and other organisations fall over themselves to provide interpreters to whoever chooses not to learn the language.

And not everyone sits the citizenship test by any stretch, they don't need to.

But things are changing a little, unemployed migrants will have to learn English and won't necessarily have a right to a free interpreter to help them claim their dole.

No, up to a few years ago people could migrate to the UK, not speak a word of English and be wholly unemployable as a consequence - but demand benfits for life, a free translation service to claim those benefits and be under no obligation to ever learn English to improve their employability.
Hence there are ethnic ghettos of 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation migrants who do nothing but claim benefits, breed and study the Koran or Torah.

And various other agencies are forced to follow suit, eg the Police for one.
