A lot of them do join the military because they have nothing else going for them in their small towns except a future as a drug dealer or as a taco bell cashier. You, who grew up in the shadow of NYC and have never left, can't possibly understand the hopelessness they feel. They're generally good, solid, people who had the misfortune of being born in the wrong place and in the wrong era. Is it their fault that the cities got rich and drove up the value of the dollar? Is it their fault that city dwelling MBA's decided to start closing factories and ship the jobs to places with lower wages in order to boost their stock price temporarily? No.SuperJail Warden wrote:
A lot of them could have joined the military and made something out of their life like you did. If they did less drinking they could have gotten engineering degrees. Their situation is unique to the western world because they are purposefully ignorant.
I'm not advocating economic nationalism, or closed borders, or tariffs for these people. The way of life they had is gone and it's not coming back until the pendulum swings and we're the third world country with depressed wages. Just stop being the coastal snob looking down on them as unwashed and uncouth. They're not. And frankly, a good chunk of their beliefs and values are far superior to yours. They'd never try to remove the social stigma and illegality of kitty stomping.
