seeing as we're playing 'the iron law of anecdotes' game, i will add that i don't know a single person in my age bracket (20–30) who sits in a state-paid house all day claiming benefits and being perfectly content. young people want jobs, they want careers, they want relationships, they may even want silly material things and expensive clothes and fast-cars and other follies. i don't know a single 24 year old who collects a cheque and sits at home all month being perfectly happy. are my anecdotes better because i'm closer to the age bracket? i'm not sure how this game works.
i think the stereotypical image of a benefits scrounger in this country is more like a 40+ individual who has dropped out of the workforce because of some minor, prior injury and has lost the motivation. problematic drug use creeps in to fill the existential ennui and purposelessness. i don't see young people taking it up as a lifestyle choice.

As Jay points out, work for $600 a week and be taxed on it, or do nothing and get $500/wk tax free and a free house.
Its not a hard calculation.
If we're talking anecdotes:
I know various employers, people who make hiring decisions etc who are very familiar with a particular underclass which has no appetite for work.
They get put into jobs through various govt schemes and typically last less than a week.
I talked to one guy who said it was a consistent pattern. The company would agree to take on an unemployed, usually at no cost to the company.
Monday - they'd turn up an hour late and groggy, be unable to learn anything let alone work.
Tuesday - they'd turn up two hours late, stagger around a bit and have to leave early
Wednesday - they'd phone in "this shit is doing my fucking head in, I'm not coming in fuck off"
My sister had one, who showed up an hour late on day one, said he was going out to get a coffee and was not seen again.
In our street we have a doss-house with a stream of tenants who don't work, sleep all day and occasionally go into town to busk or beg.
They do seem to have the energy to party from 2pm on a Saturday afternoon through to 6pm on the Sunday though.
People like this have figured out that breeding kids is a terrific source of extra income

In the past these people would not get dole and would have to take a labouring job. The labouring jobs are gone, the community is awash with drugs, dole is over-generous, its not a great combination.

And yes I knew a few Henriettas who decided getting pregnant at the first opportunity, ditching the bloke and never working was the lifestyle for them.

Casual employees also get at least a 25 per cent casual loading. But no paid leave.

So when you take into account housing costs it actually pays more to sit on your ass than to work for the minimum.DrunkFace wrote:

Well no one works for minimum wage, but even if they did, its not even close.
Newstart Allowance was $528.70 per fortnight for single people, or $477.40 each for a couple, Recipients who rent privately are also eligible for Rent Assistance which could be up to $124.00 per fortnight for a single person and $116.60 for a couple.

It is pretty sad that a jobless welfare case in Australia still has a better quality of life than most of the American working poor.
I am not criticize Australia's welfare system. Just talking about how bad our everything system is here.

We have a similar issue called the welfare cliff where it pays more to stay home than to make certain income levels:

We could close the welfare trap just a little if we made healthcare universal. Losing your Medicaid or ACA subsidies is a big concern for the poor.
Free house? You're wrong there. First error. And this is my first read through this, lolDilbert_X wrote:

If you're on the internet at least look it up ffs. How you hold down a job is amazing.
People on welfare aren't far off getting a free house.
https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/housing/pu … er-charges
25% of assessable income max rent. Seems pretty close to free if you're on the dole.
The people who can't get free accommodation are usually the ones who've trashed what they've been given before.
Daily Mail is waaay better than Murdoch
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article … uburb.html
And its really not that unusual. The house opposite us had to be demolished after housos had been in it for six months.
But hey they were hardworking people who just wanted a job.

What did I get wrong? The only thing I did wrong was use your figure of $26,000. $528x52/2 = $13728/yr, not $26,000.And yet you got it wrong. Why I'm wasting my time on someone who can't research or do simple maths...

Minimum wage is $611 a week after tax. That's $110 more a week than the dole. And do you know how long the waiting list is for community housing? Really, you haven't a clue. It's more than five years, and that's for people on a DSP.
Rather than googling tabloid media you could've just googled the actual information. And one house is your argument? So flimsy.
Keep floundering, it's amusing.

I mean, you make it sound like people just get the dole and immediately get social housing. I've worked firsthand with people with chronic, debilitating mental illness and even classed as priority they have waited over seven years for a place to live. And this isn't some anecdote from a boss's friend's sister, this is my actual experience working with people and their wider support network professionals in the same field.

There is an issue with welfare being cut drastically after you earn a certain income. Taxes won't be the thing that kills you but welfare cut will. It pays the best to qualify for welfare and being able to work certain hours.
Social housing is such a mess that 1) you don't want to live in those areas and 2) there's a huge waiting list.
You realise all welfare payments are part of the taxable income lol...
I can see my arguments are being buried by fake news, don't worry, Corey Bernardi will make Australia great again and put the bludgers to work

It is really stupid to date a fat person. Fat people are untrustworthy. They will betray their bodies, they will betray you.

I've been a skinny piece of crap all my life, but it is terrifying to me to see the old fat guys at work with stomachs that jut out and create a ledge above their belts. If nothing else, it spurs me to continue eating relatively healthy things and have some motivation to exercise.
