Old enough to drive a car? Then you would be old enough to receive $2,000 a month under a plan introduced this week by two Democratic lawmakers in the House of Representatives.

Under the Emergency Money for the People Act, US citizens who are 16 or older — and make less than $130,000 a year — would receive cash payments from the federal government for at least six months and until unemployment falls to pre-pandemic levels.
This will not pass though I can see Trump signing a bill for more rounds of free Donald Dollars until election time.

If a real bill like this passes, only people over 30 should get it.

some payments were delayed so the guy could put his name in the check memo line. I want off of this ride at the next available stop.

US oil prices plunged, falling below $0 Monday to $-37.63 a barrel. That's the lowest level since NYMEX opened oil futures trading in 1983.
...
Oil storage facilities are still at risk of overflowing, raising the chance that some oil producers in the United States and Canada could start paying customers to take crude off their hands, according to Staunovo.
So we have too much oil. Still people aren't starving in the streets and the farmers are throwing away food. It really makes me wonder how much of the economy and consumption is superfluous if we have too much energy and food.

I guess superfluous is all in how you define it. Most of the oil demand decrease is due to less manufacturing of 'non-essential' goods and people no longer driving to work. Food is another matter--I understand it is a transportation issue?

A lot of food production was earmarked for restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. They have no one to sell it to.

Ah, I guess that makes sense. I'd hope they can find they find new buyers, as people must still be eating food.

My state's governor asked people to report stores that limited milk products, since they were initially sold out, because they were throwing truckloads down the drain once supply lines caught up.

I noticed that the stimulus may have added inflation to the collectibles market. Prices of MTG cards were deflated for a little while during the early pandemic. Once the stimulus came, prices of cards recovered and a lot of the most desirable ones became sold out.

People are sitting at home with nothing to do, so of course they're reminiscing and buying up old stuff.

For a Magic the Gathering card to be expensive, it doesn't need to be old. These cards haven't even been realsed yet.

Just remember, the unwrapping gives more of a kick than actually having the thing.

I think I've settled on a Nikon D750, they're in runout so if not available when this Wuhan virus is over then a D780, they're both a bit big though.
DFs are unavailable, I suppose I could go secondhand.
My used Nikon FE did great for about 20 years and I had a lot of fun with it.

So far the only think I've bought is some CADCAM software for my robot, A$1000.

Going great so far, and the robot likes the code.

Also dabbling in re-buying some of the shares I sold, buying and selling on the volatility, the market could go any direction from here, I think it has a lot further to drop.

I'm saving a ridiculous amount of money. Never really noticed how much i spent on "entertainment" until i couldn't go out. No sports, no nights out with friends, no grabbing a drink after work, no going to do 'xyz' activity on a whim.

I did buy a new sofa, bed, tv and video game system, so maybe it's a wash.

definitely missing the gym. I haven't weighed myself lately but the belly pudge is noticeable. I'm making an effort to not be a lazy eater but it's somewhat expected. Working from home every other week means having the time to cook things that I otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to.

Start counting calories. Don't eat more than you need for your lifestyle, and burn an appropriate amount through exercise you don't need a gym for.

Seriously, even if you just eat a banana for a snack, put that on your daily tab.

oh i used to use myfitnesspal religiously. The problem is lack of exercise. I haven't been able to successfully transition from going to the gym -> home gym.

Yeah, I hear ya. Sometimes it's just a mindset thing. If I go to the effort of rolling out the mat and starting with a thorough bunch of stretches, I figure I might as well not have wasted my time and finish up with the actual exercising. Keeping tabs on calorie intake and usage seems to be a major part of it for me. If I don't keep track, I might eat more than I should or treat myself to a giant mason jar of cranberry ginger ale for a gaming session when I'm already over daily recommended.

CNN made the argument that up to 43 million Americans are out of work or underemployed. That doesn't count about 2 weeks of layoffs that took place between now and when the jobless report took place.

https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2020/05 … ment-rate/

Another statistic showed that only 51% of working age Americans are actually in the work force at all. An all time low. Interestingly the fake numbers on Wall Street went up today.

If there is a major economic calamity going on I haven't noticed it. The lights are still on, the water is still running, food is still available. I mentioned this before but is seems plausible that we could effectively run society without needing everyone to work. I mean at least a bare minimum of food, water, and electricity. We don't need a dozen bars in town. Or a McDonalds across the street from a Burger King.

UBI has been on the agenda of the left for decades. even the right are starting to see their own uses for it.

It does nothing but raise inflation.

which study? and america is unique anyway. i'm sure there's serious economic problems and other shit it can cause that none of us can comprehend since we're not economists.

i don't think it would work in a place like america. ppl are motivated by money and that shit fuels creativity and innovation etc.

and how do u explain that to an essential worker when every1 else gets free shit. automation will be cool but there's still gonna be a lot of jobs that require a human.

"sorry u gotta work bro but this guy can stay home and just get free money"

ya...

edit: look dude that shit would be cool but we gotta be realistic and keep it 100%. we both know it wouldnt work. its an interesting theory tho

So the fundamental key to the whole thing is that everyone gets the 'free money' whether they work or not. It's a floor. If you are motivated by money, you get even more money by putting in the work. The tax system is used to 'balance' the payments to the lower class and the upper classes. One major criticisms of the system is actually that capital flight is a real risk, because to implement it on a grand scale you need to play with the tax brackets. There you might have a case that America is unique bc of the fetish for the rich and the fact that it's an ethical imperative that they not be taxed...or something
