I am building up my side business so I can go out on my own in the next five years. I currently make approximately 1/4 of my income from this side business doing consulting mechanical, sprinkler, and plumbing engineering design work. I work at it a few days a month. My hourly rate doing this work is more than double what my salaried rate is, because, thanks to all the thousands of hours I wasted playing video games, I type and draw very, very, quickly.

Unfortunately, it is not very steady. As soon as it becomes more steady I'm gone, and so is my commute. A recent project netted me $5,400 for about 20 hours of work. My goal is to maintain roughly where I'm at now financially, while zeroing out my commute, aside from occasional surveys, and working half the time.

america: where people work 60 hours contractually and a second job, are damn pleased with themselves about it, and dismiss UBI, basic healthcare, and any attempts at pandemic response.

UK chancellor predicts today that we are facing 'a recession the likes of which we have not seen'. great depression-era all over again.

it seems quaint that we're on here talking about the political stability of china. i don't think we even have a clue what's coming.

children are dying from heretofore rare immune conditions. i can guarantee it that as soon as someone close to you gets sick, you'll loose your sangfroid.

working-age people are dying in non-negligible numbers. and they're not all throwaway public services workers, either, jay. top surgeons and medical professionals are being killed. that's a large economic loss.

it's too bad that you've joined a death cult.

life-years lost due to economic recession are very much a thing. but so are 100,000s dying every year from an avoidable disease. a highly infectious, avoidable disease, jay, whose death toll won't remain static and constant.

Uzi, child deaths are rare. 99% of the dead are over 75 years old. Everyone younger was just incredibly unlucky or had pre-existing conditions.

America's economic issues related to COVID were entirely a policy choice of this administration. The U.S. is probably the only country in history that can print an almost endless amount of money and people would accept it. We could have instituted some sort of UBI and public works system and gotten through this just fine. Instead the most economically gifted nation turned into the most economically afflicted in the western world.

Or the democrats could've not caved to their rich, white, health, and death obsessed constituents, who were willing to sacrifice the world to save their own skin, because they knew they were immune financially.

aren't all those inner-city brown and black people you find so negligible pro-lockdown, jay?

actually, i understand why republicans use 'health obsessed' as an insult, now.

The one thing you can't buy is health. I live in one of the wealthiest areas on the planet. On a typical weekend you'll see the roads covered by cyclists and joggers. In a typical local super market, the organic aisles tend to dwarf the non-organic aisles. People pay top dollar for anything that they think will make them even the slightest bit healthier. They also tend to vote Democrat and nominally care about social issues, but it has more to do with social signalling.

The same type of people can be found in Park Slope and the Upper West and Upper East Sides. They have money, and they have connections, and they donate to causes they care about, and they donate to Democrat political campaigns. Their influence in state and local politics is immense. Sure, your typical minority votes Democrat, but that typical minority also doesn't have the cell phone number of someone that can get them in contact with the mayor or the governor. Same sort of thing applies to New Jersey and Connecticut and California and Illinois.

These people were the first to sound the alarm about the virus. They were the first to self-quarantine, and they were the ones that demanded everyone else quarantine as well. They're the ones that snitch to the newspapers about people playing basketball in parks, or swimming at the beach, or drinking beer outside of a bar. Those people potentially being unsafe puts them at potential risk, even though they've built walled gardens around their own existence to prevent it. Their obsession with safety, health, and prolonging their own lives was what led to the shutdowns. Anything less was completely unacceptable. They thought about the quarantine in terms that would impact them. They understood that they wouldn't be able to go out to dinner for a while. But going without a haircut or a manicure or even the gym for a few months was a small price to pay. They didn't give any thought to the owner of that gym, or that nail salon, or that barber, or the restaurant servers because they can't relate to them. Their own job was portable and they could just Grubhub and Amazon Prime their way through the quarantine.

The best part is they're all complete hypocrites. They're still demanding full quarantine and fighting any reopening measures, but it's mostly because they hate Trump and they're against anything he is for, but they're also sneaking out and having play dates for their kids on the sly because their kids are withering. I went to a haircut/pool party over the weekend with a bunch of people that would absolutely not be friends with me ever again if I advertised their attendance. So, believe what you want. but even the most health obsessed among us are now agreeing that the cure was worse than the disease and are ready to get back to normal. Privately, anyway.

If we didn't take the precautions that people like you and your suburban friends lament, the death toll and sickness rate would be much higher. The economic damage might have been just as bad or even worse. People can't comprehend that their situation could be worse or the fact that we aren't even out of this yet. And blaming suburban white democrats for an exaggerated response doesn't explain why everyone else in the world also went into a lock downs just as harsh or worse than we did.

Your suburban friends probably don't think this was too bad because you survived and NYC's outbreak was centered around housing projects and nursing homes. Out of sight and out of mind.

Yes, we locked down, and it happened anyway. We had a governor that forced nursing homes to care for those sick with COVID and it wiped out thousands. We have public housing projects full of people who don't give a fuck about anything, and they got hit hard. We have hasidic communities that believe everything is God's will, and they got hit hard. Aside from the nursing home stuff that shit was going to happen regardless. Nothing changed. No lives were saved.

NYC locked down late. I think it was almost a full week before they shut down their schools after NJ did. They only did it after getting pressured to. I think the housing project outbreak has more to do with poverty, and close living than it has to do with how urban poor mentally approached the crisis. The urbanized poor made up the vast amount of essential workers that still needed to go out and do things. The urbanized poor had an even harder time getting PPE than wealthy people. And again, the PPE or just about any shortage is inexcusable considering the wealth of the federal government.

it didn't happen anyway. you locked down and greatly retarded the spread of the disease. how can you not comprehend that it would be much worse without the lockdown?

We have public housing projects full of people who don't give a fuck about anything, and they got hit hard.
you don't make any sense. in one post you are bemoaning elite liberals who can 'grubhub and amazon prime' through a quarantine. you talk about how they are happy to throw the lower-income people under the bus by closing their small businesses.

but then you say that projects are full of people 'who don't give a fuck about anything'? as opposed to, er, inhabited by the taxi drivers, bus drivers, and janitors of the city? so the people who have to work and need an income to make rent, it's their fault for getting the disease and dying in high numbers?

And poor black people tend to be obese and have much higher rates of diabetes. They were going to be ravaged comparatively if it got loose, and it did. The virus already hit the communities it was most likely to hurt badly. The quarantine was pointless.
