lots and lots of UK people can trace their ancestry back to the normans, by the way. there are however only about 4 families with direct patrilineal, propertied link to 1066. it's not some glamorous and noteworthy thing for 99% of people who have muddled their way through the last millennium.

also the normans aren’t associated with vikings here, even though that is literally their origins. they are considered norman french. their biggest legacy on the english-world was 1066 and the invasion of a new french-norman elite on england. the biggest change to british culture since the romans, and lastingly so, as they’re still basically the landed elite and gentry here, as well as judges, politicians, etc.

being a french-speaking elite with french language used at court, in legal proceedings, etc, they’re always associated with their french identity (normandy) rather than vikings.

this probably is to aid confusion seeing as the british isles, especially the north and north-east, and the former danelaw regions, have a heavy viking heritage too. the french normans were seen as a conquering force and a different culture to the actual norse culture on the islands.

Yes, the Normans were fully French by the time of William C's invasion. Normans are usually considered to be the ones who brought continental style feudalism to England though I don't know enough about that to make a determination.

From what I understand the Norman kings were often disinterested in England and focused on politics and war in France. A lot of Norman kings barely or only briefly ever lived in England and instead spent their time trying to conquer France and later the Holy Land. From what I recall Richard the Lionheart spoke French as his primary language and only visited England a handful of times.

The Norman conquest of Sicily is another interesting part of that history and they left an amazing cultural imprint there.

I do not like anything related to Vikings otherwise. They were a bunch of starving rapist and murderers who terrorized a weak Christendom. And no one looks good in a Viking beard. The hair of cucks and secret gays.

haha yes, that's the line commonly taught in english schools. maybe to save some residuum of pride.

the british isles were actually highly organized and ruled well prior to 1066. we had some very formative kings, such as king alfred in the 9th century, who kickstarted widespread literacy and an official administrative culture. but anyway.

there was plenty of celtic and northern paganism on the british isles before the normans, it's very interesting stuff. pre-christian europe is in many ways more interesting than the churchy bit.
