i can almost guarantee you that i listen to a lot more classical and jazz than you do. i have a big interest in classical. let me know though i’m sure you have an extensive collection of recordings in your wood panelled NJ basement.

What kind of jazz do you like?
mostly west coast but also a fair amount of bebop through to free jazz. art pepper to ornette coleman.
huge fan of european jazz, ECM especially. lots of good stuff from scandinavia, like arve henriksen.
there’s still a really big free jazz and improv scene in london but i haven’t followed it so much in recent years. you have to really go to the right venues to keep up with it.

i was actually listening to a random jaco pastorius bass tune and something about the pinched harmonics/artificial harmonics in it immediately reminded me of that el-p cannibal ox beat. turns out it flips a sample from the tune. that's got to be a sign of a good beat. i haven't listened to that album in like 10 years.
there are so many great beats on this album. el-p really found some gold nuggets with his sampling.

the piece is amazing of course. can't say the same about the performance though. violin is ridiculously hard to play well, but i'd still prefer less fuckups.
