IIRC, the major difference between the IRL duel and the movie seems to be the establishment of a prior relationship between the rapist and the husband and raped wife. Also the loser got stabbed in a different place. In the movie he took a knife through the mouth. IRL he took it through the throat.unnamednewbie13 wrote:
An Affleck interview has pretty much set the tone for what I expect:"Historical truth wouldn't have served the narrative needs," suggests to me that the movie is a highly fictionalized cherry pick.latimes wrote:
“So it wasn’t so much about hewing fastidiously to historical truth, because that wouldn’t have served the narrative needs we were as interested in, as much as illuminating the fact that the vestiges of the sexism and misogyny of the patriarchy we live with now come from a place that was Western civilization’s codified value system.”

The article goes on to state that the movie is "at least 75% accurate," which is hugely not useful in terms of historical viewing without a lot of disclaimer and supplementary material like an historian's commentary/caption track or even a lecture.
This genre is all like "based on a true story!" and I'm sitting here like "bAsEd oN a TrUe StOrY," and then people watch it thinking they might have learned something but a quarter or more of it could be complete and utter fabrication for "narrative needs."
Like Chernobyl.
Dislike.
Takes I keep seeing are that the film had messy storytelling, or was inconsistent, or failed to properly filter its content through the modern lens or whatever (the one thing it was intended to do, according to interviews?). "Exhausting storytelling" WSJ puts it.
Hopefully the Emu War movie due out next year does better.

I am social media. I said that the movie should have been available online. I would have paid $10 to own a copy at home. I am too busy to hike to a theater and watch a movie I apparently already knew the ending too.Last Duel did not have a good weekend at the box office. As a medieval epic from director Ridley Scott for the post-#MeToo era, the 20th Century Studios release posted a meager $4.8 million over its first three days in release. And that is on a reported budget of $100 million—a figure which does not include marketing and publicity costs.
...
On social media, I’ve already seen some suggesting that The Last Duel should have been a streaming release. And there’s some cold, despairing logic to that. Older audiences who might be attracted to a movie like The Last Duel are more inclined to stay home and watch whatever’s on Netflix, especially after the pandemic.
You could pay me the cost of a ticket each time, and I wouldn't go watch anything at a theater right now. No matter how nostalgic the experience.
Vaccine plus facemask.

Theater showings were not particularly something I frequented on my own unless it was something I had to see, in recent years leading to 2020. There wasn't a whole lot that I had to see that I couldn't wait for.
Expensive tickets, expensive concessions, gotta go at inconvenient times of day to get a showing in relative peace without babies, obnoxious groups, and people on their cell phones at what must be brightness settings intentionally set to max. I should have been wearing tissue boxes on my feet because the floors are sticky as hell. An urge to chuck everything straight into the laundry normally reserved for the conclusion of normally acknowledged, gross tasks.
The last couple years have sort of ripped the bandaid off of that attenuating hobby for me. There's like a million better things I could do with thirty bucks and an afternoon.

Regarding pricing...I would have to pay a toll, gas, and parking just to get a ticket. Does get expensive quick. I do enjoy the movie theater experience though.
Being an occasion or just an outing with someone adds exponential value to the experience. As it stands now though, sitting in a stuffy chamber in a crowd including maybe 10 or 15 antivaxxer covid deniers, not my idea of a good time rn.
I am going to watch the Dune movie right now. Not excited. Feels like a chore. Never read the books and scifi isn't my thing.
20 minutes into Dune...was the book a young adult novel? The hero seems like a youth that young men could project themselves onto.
I can't do a 2 and a half hour coming of age story set in space.

T-T-Triple Post
I decided to take a look at some reviews once I got 20 minutes in.
Criticism seems to be that the movie is slow. The actor who plays Paul isn't interesting enough to carry the movie. People who like the book will probably like it but for everyone else it is probably a skip.
Reminds me of Lord of the Rings. Couldn't stand that either. Never read those books. Another series of meh unless you are already invested.
Special shout-out to the producers of Game of Thrones. They were able to take nerd shit source material and make it actually interesting to a wide audience.

Marvel puts up good numbers too.RTHKI wrote:
Ah yes. 3 billion for 3 movies. A narrow audience.
It is the same group of people watching LoTR, Marvel, and Dune. Maybe I should assign them an animal.
Duck people?

So anyway let me get this straight, you don't like sci-fi movies, but were still going to watch a sci-fi movie to moan and groan about it over a series of posts. And that people who watch Marvel are duck people, or duckling people.HOW OLD IS PAUL IN DUNE?
The character of Paul is 15-years-old in Dune.
Although it’s not explicitly addressed in the movie, the ducal heir of House Atreides is this age in the novel. He was born in 10175 AG.
As for Timothée, the American actor is 25-years-old. Although the star is a decade older than the character he’s portraying, the creative team arguably does a terrific job of making him appear even more youthful.

Newbie, duck man.
Duck people shitting all over the place.
I only tried to watch this meh movie to understand the memes duck people post.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

There are going to be some films for which reading the book is a prerequisite.

I haven't seen the new Dune movie.SuperJail Warden wrote:

Why do you care about Dune memes? You don't like sci-fi, unless it has zombies. Osmosis enough Dune lore and you'll find out that it too has zombies, of a sort.
You already called me a bird person. If need be, I choose crow. I can teach my kids to hate your face and scream at your house at 5 am. They will pass it down the generations.
Duck men are going to be shitting these memes all over the place. Or so I would have thought until I tried watching the movie. The boring movie.

Last Duel: 7/10
Its was OK, perfectly filmed, acted, an interesting bit of history, triple thread was totally redundant, nuances so small as to not matter.
Somewhat coloured by this being an obvious attempt by Affleck and Damon to redeem themselves for being on the wrong side of Weinstein and and #metoo
Totally fucked off with going to the cinema now. People fucking around with their phones on full brightness, people letting their phones ring and checking to see who is calling them, same for texts, Indians not wearing masks etc.

It ended the same way in history. Mostly at least. I didn't see it since hiking it to a theater is a no go.
At least you didn't get crushed at the theater while Ben Affleck sings at you.

Cube 1997 - Still Awesome
Now I have to dig up Hypercube from somewhere.
Apparently there's a crappy japanese remake of Cube, cant wait.

Played some coop games the other night. This one guy really wanted me to go see the new Dune in theaters, since I didn't have the streaming service. I conceded I might look at the IMAX if there was a nearby showing, otherwise wait for the disc.
I did watch a video of some effects artists commenting favorably on the work done, so there's that.
In return, I told him to go check out the old strategy games, which he didn't know about.
