Regarding throwing money at poor communities...it matters a lot how you do it. I love the idea of giving people government jobs if they can't find any other work. That's basically what we did during the Great Depression. That system has its issues but it is better than what we have now.

The cool thing about a government jobs program also is that those jobs tire people out. I mentioned in the other thread it is young guys causing most of the madness. Put a lot of them into blue collar work and they will be too tired to do crime. Make it easy for them to get pot and playstations too.

Anyhow regarding mental health...a big reason a lot of facilities and residential homes were closed because conditions were poor and there was a big change in how we approached long term treatment. Now the objective is to "mainstream" or try to integrate the ill and slow into society as much as possible.

It's a complicated subject. No perfect solutions. Good people will be harmed no matter what we do.

affordable housing is really just the crux of it. it's a shame that the banks and their investment wings are so all-in for the property bubble. it's literally in no one's interests to depress the value of housing. except for the vast majority of people who can't afford a home, of course. oops.

you don't have to 'throw money at poor communities', though the effects of good infrastructure, good schools, good hospitals, etc, on a community and their life outcomes has been proven 1,000 times over in every sort of empirical study. investing in communities really does work: maybe not immediately on human behaviour and community culture, but, eventually, it does start giving people a leg up and a stake in society.

you just have to give them a reasonable prospect of owning their own house and establishing some stability and security for their family. you'd be surprised how much that does for people, both on the level of individual psychology (anxiety, anti-social behaviour, etc) and in terms of community. when people are transient, at the whim of asshole landlords/rentiers, and generally dispossessed, they check out. it starts in the home, it extends into school, and follows them all their adult life. being poor is traumatic and humiliating and people will abreact and compensate into things like 'thug life'.

That doesn't sound like a real argument.

Imagine someone who might have gone on to cure a horrible disease, but doesn't because of inequality in education meant being assigned to a poorly equipped school, and besides they had to go to work in the evenings to help support their family. Not the best state of affairs for otherwise supporters of technological innovation and salvation to stand behind, just because of graffiti in the subway. "Pah! Poor people won't appreciate it."

I feel like this is such a waste of memespace. They could be brave and just come out and say it directly, but instead rely on some weird codephrase like a bunch of giggling adolescents.

The Nascar origins aren't making their stereotype look any better, either.

NY is allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections. Not sure how to feel about that. What do you think?

I am OK with the concept if it's initially for stuff that directly impacts alien residents like property laws or parks and stuff. They pay taxes too. I think this could help enfranchise immigrants. Scope could be expanded later.

I would be curious to compare the turnout figures between citizens and aliens.
