i would say definitely.
Here is a Christmas movie scene that came up in my Youtube recommended that I cannot relate to.
Fuck Israel
I'd say it's floating in the same Christmas purgatory as Die Hard and Batman Returns, though maybe a bit closer to dock. Gizmo was a Christmas present and the movie had that Scrooge woman. Gets a pass I guess.
Batman Returns, Catwoman kills her boss and herself(?) and Penguin, I dunno, dies or something. Batman adopts a stray cat we never see again. Two movies later we get a plant lady whose color theme is red and green, playing alongside Father Winter. Why does Batman & Robin never get pedestaled as a Christmas movie?
The Long Kiss Goodnight had a Christmas party and Christmas music in the score(?), why doesn't that get more attention as a Christmas movie?
Lethal Weapon had a smattering of Christmas stuff in it, still don't think it conventionally applies.
Our retail atmosphere gets geared up for the holiday as early as July and winds down all the way into the next year. Get your fireworks and ornament shopping done in one day. Is the Christmas stuff in movies incidental or instrumental? How integral is the setting? Would the story work at any other time. Could you still call it Christmas-oriented even at points in its timeline where it isn't even the season or whatever?
At the very least all this stuff does provide some options other than A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, and a billion Santa and Christmas Carol rehashes. One of those things I could talk about more than it actually bothers me.

I think any movie set around Christmas time and references the Holiday is a Christmas movie.

What constitutes a Christmas film to any given household doesn't have to tick all the usual checkboxes. Totally different criteria. Up to them, fine by me. It doesn't even have to have so much as a Christmas bauble in it, if you want to watch it every Dec, go for it.

I think I posted this stuff in FWP because I was FWP tired of being wink-wink-nudge-nudged at by feeds telling me for what must be the 30th year in a row that Die Hard is a Christmas movie, as if that's supposed throw me for a loop. Real shocker of a meme. Feels like every year that some movie emag (or social media post) will put out a list of "surprise Christmas classics" that's basically a cut & paste of the previous year's. IMO, Christmas is probably weaker in Die Hard than in some WW2 movies.

I share a room with a film teacher. The kids watch films and talk about them. Take quizzes on the film they watched to make sure they paid attention. 80 inch 4K T.V. they bought for this class.
I talk with this guy often since he is new and also they dump a lot of the Special Education kids into his class so that they don't ruin the academic and fine art extracurriculars for the other kids. The T.V. they bought to do this is $2000.
A few weeks ago we had this conversation
"Hey Mac, what do you think we should show for the week before Christmas?"
"Hmm. That's a good question."
"My director said put on Die Hard since everyone says it is a Christmas movie. I don't think that is school worthy though."
"How about that one with the guy gets visited by the three ghost?"
"It's a Wonderful Life. It's a black and white movie. The kids probably wouldn't like it. Maybe something animated. Frosty?"
"Nightmare Before Christmas? Has Christmas in the name"
"I don't know I have to think about this"
He settled on the Polar Express which we agreed was a great choice. The kids loved it. John McClane would have to put a gun to my head to get me to watch something with Tom Hanks though. Maybe Netflix can make a live action adaptation set on the 4th of July.

Where is my Smart TV remote McClane?
Do you think the Polar Express is just rotting in the trainyard for 364 days a year? Of course it has a side job delivering American rednecks to the land of blown off fingers.
Polar Express is probably a very safe (if unexciting) choice for high school film class. Weird choice though depending I guess on how much work is expected out of student analysis. Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me, a teacher handed me a VHS of Alien once and told me to share my thoughts after watching. Different times.
Do your school's film students get to watch horror sci-fi?
e: ah, good, the filter is still in place

Someone should deepfake Bruce Willis onto that gif of a kid who Alan Rickman smacked with a book in that role.
They so far watched the Blind Side, Planet of the Apes, Do the Right Thing and the Polar Express. The film teacher was out for half of the blah with a license issue. They could have chewed through more stuff if he was there. The kids seem to really enjoy the class.
Alien was groundbreaking horror Sci-fi though the teacher, an old white guy, seems to want to include stuff with social commentary and people the kids can relate to. Culturally Relevant Teaching. Have to applaud him there. I wouldn't in a million years have the balls to screen Do the Right Thing. I am too busy running interference for the British Empire in my class. I did show them a clip of the film Zulu.

Alien is one of the movies always cited in counter whenever someone complains about how action movies never have strong female protagonists. Then a hundred other examples get listed. Not to discredit the argument that representation of the sexes in film history could be a little skewed at times, but it's probably an overstatement to say that some new film in 2013 or 2017 or whatever has the first ever female action lead.
I thought it was an interesting assignment, something there for a lot of high school viewers. I don't really see how spamming Golden Compass or whatever at the high school level is going to shock paddle any slumbering movie minds. Film class should be deceptively challenging, and definitely not a glorified babysitter. If there aren't a few students dropping out of it because it was more than they were expecting, the system is skiving off.

If they made Half Life 2 today people would be angry about Alxy Vance. I think people digest whatever representation just fine in the moment. It's when people get into their little wells of online negativity do they start to get angry about stuff that really isn't a big deal.
The first time I saw that purple haired lady in the Star Wars movie I knew then and there that people were going to be pissed off about that on the internet. I would have preferred to Admiral Ackbar was the one to uh dramatically commit suicide. The idea of the whole crew standing around cheering a squid monster as he goes off to kill himself and many others. The scene is absolutely brilliant in my head.

i think video games for the most part have had extremely retrograde narrative. which is fine, obviously 70% of what makes a game great isn’t plot/narrative in any strict sense. games are about a lot more formally than representation; in a lot of games, the representations are almost beyond the point (thinking of multiplayer FPS games, e.g. terrorists and CTs or allies and axis, who is really invested in that stuff — nobody, it’s the underlying game mechanics people play for).
i don’t see anything that wrong with alyx. and obviously they just put her centre-stage on their latest half life offering.

People would be upset she wasn't feminine enough. "Mary Sue". "Ugh was having a good time exploring City 17 and suddenly Alyx [whatever]"
People are used to her now. But if they were introduced for the first time today I think the there would be some people annoyed and upset.

wasn’t feminine enough? err the first ever female ‘lead’ character was lara croft from tomb raider.
Pro tip: don't Google Lara croft boobsuziq wrote:

I just ingested way too much smut from finding that picture. I am going to bed.
she was always extremely sexualised, of course. gaming audiences were predominantly male during the console era. i’m certainly not claiming her as a feminist icon. but people aren’t exactly unused to the idea of a tomboyish female character. alyx is very much in the lara croft mode.
i remember there were some reskins/HD mods for HL2 which brought the game’s graphics up to date. some of the optional updated models for alyx were … interesting.

The Freeman's Mind guy started a series on Half-Life 2 awhile back, and is currently about to Ravenholm. The narration's take was rather similar to my thoughts, having fought tooth and nail in that forever hovercraft section getting shot at by armored cars, helicopters, and the rest of the army, only to show up at the rebel hideout where everyone is acting completely casual and unconcerned about events that could bring their whole base down around their ears. This includes Alyx. Why are we doing a tutorial section now, the Combine could attack at any moment! And so it did.SuperJail Warden wrote:

I think purple-haired character rubbed people the wrong way because nobody could figure out what on earth her deal was until the expectations were subverted. Nerd culture, on the other hand, loves Fifth Element's orange-haired heroine.
re: female leads in video games, there's always samus from metroid, although it wasn't obvious from a casual perspective. lara croft is one of the video game badasses. running around with glass in her feet like john mcclane would basically be nothing for her. beyond good and evil gets decent retrospective press.
tons of other games where the pc starts out as a customizable paper doll, and it doesn't really impact the story much. although I still don't understand why argonians have boobs in elder scrolls.
and then there was that one video game where the nerds lost their collective because a female character's cheeks were too round. in another (star wars) video game, a supporting female character was mocked because she had "funny-looking" eyes.

i've said this here before, but: nobody who gets laid often can possibly give a fuck about this shit. nobody who has healthy, constructive, positive relationships with women gets angry about women characters in star wars movies, or playable female characters in battlefield games, or pronouns, or whatever the fuck.
Let's be real newb she looked weird. So did the male lead cause his jaw isn't symmetrical or something I forget, it looked so weird in motion.
It was a mild annoyance and didn't rate the game lower cause of it.
Now Battlefront 2 the female character death screams were kinda weird they were so high pitched and loud v the male ones.

this meme has no business being this good at this point.
