Here is a Christmas movie scene that came up in my Youtube recommended that I cannot relate to.

I'd say it's floating in the same Christmas purgatory as Die Hard and Batman Returns, though maybe a bit closer to dock. Gizmo was a Christmas present and the movie had that Scrooge woman. Gets a pass I guess.

Batman Returns, Catwoman kills her boss and herself(?) and Penguin, I dunno, dies or something. Batman adopts a stray cat we never see again. Two movies later we get a plant lady whose color theme is red and green, playing alongside Father Winter. Why does Batman & Robin never get pedestaled as a Christmas movie?

The Long Kiss Goodnight had a Christmas party and Christmas music in the score(?), why doesn't that get more attention as a Christmas movie?

Lethal Weapon had a smattering of Christmas stuff in it, still don't think it conventionally applies.



Our retail atmosphere gets geared up for the holiday as early as July and winds down all the way into the next year. Get your fireworks and ornament shopping done in one day. Is the Christmas stuff in movies incidental or instrumental? How integral is the setting? Would the story work at any other time. Could you still call it Christmas-oriented even at points in its timeline where it isn't even the season or whatever?

At the very least all this stuff does provide some options other than A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, and a billion Santa and Christmas Carol rehashes. One of those things I could talk about more than it actually bothers me.

What constitutes a Christmas film to any given household doesn't have to tick all the usual checkboxes. Totally different criteria. Up to them, fine by me. It doesn't even have to have so much as a Christmas bauble in it, if you want to watch it every Dec, go for it.

I think I posted this stuff in FWP because I was FWP tired of being wink-wink-nudge-nudged at by feeds telling me for what must be the 30th year in a row that Die Hard is a Christmas movie, as if that's supposed throw me for a loop. Real shocker of a meme. Feels like every year that some movie emag (or social media post) will put out a list of "surprise Christmas classics" that's basically a cut & paste of the previous year's. IMO, Christmas is probably weaker in Die Hard than in some WW2 movies.

Someone should deepfake Bruce Willis onto that gif of a kid who Alan Rickman smacked with a book in that role.

Alien is one of the movies always cited in counter whenever someone complains about how action movies never have strong female protagonists. Then a hundred other examples get listed. Not to discredit the argument that representation of the sexes in film history could be a little skewed at times, but it's probably an overstatement to say that some new film in 2013 or 2017 or whatever has the first ever female action lead.

I thought it was an interesting assignment, something there for a lot of high school viewers. I don't really see how spamming Golden Compass or whatever at the high school level is going to shock paddle any slumbering movie minds. Film class should be deceptively challenging, and definitely not a glorified babysitter. If there aren't a few students dropping out of it because it was more than they were expecting, the system is skiving off.

i think video games for the most part have had extremely retrograde narrative. which is fine, obviously 70% of what makes a game great isn’t plot/narrative in any strict sense. games are about a lot more formally than representation; in a lot of games, the representations are almost beyond the point (thinking of multiplayer FPS games, e.g. terrorists and CTs or allies and axis, who is really invested in that stuff — nobody, it’s the underlying game mechanics people play for).

i don’t see anything that wrong with alyx. and obviously they just put her centre-stage on their latest half life offering.

wasn’t feminine enough? err the first ever female ‘lead’ character was lara croft from tomb raider.

The first time I saw that purple haired lady in the Star Wars movie I knew then and there that people were going to be pissed off about that on the internet. I would have preferred to Admiral Ackbar was the one to uh dramatically commit suicide. The idea of the whole crew standing around cheering a squid monster as he goes off to kill himself and many others. The scene is absolutely brilliant in my head.

The Freeman's Mind guy started a series on Half-Life 2 awhile back, and is currently about to Ravenholm. The narration's take was rather similar to my thoughts, having fought tooth and nail in that forever hovercraft section getting shot at by armored cars, helicopters, and the rest of the army, only to show up at the rebel hideout where everyone is acting completely casual and unconcerned about events that could bring their whole base down around their ears. This includes Alyx. Why are we doing a tutorial section now, the Combine could attack at any moment! And so it did.

I think purple-haired character rubbed people the wrong way because nobody could figure out what on earth her deal was until the expectations were subverted. Nerd culture, on the other hand, loves Fifth Element's orange-haired heroine.

i've said this here before, but: nobody who gets laid often can possibly give a fuck about this shit. nobody who has healthy, constructive, positive relationships with women gets angry about women characters in star wars movies, or playable female characters in battlefield games, or pronouns, or whatever the fuck.
