1 corinthians 13:11
necro-re: I've seen this posted before elsewhere in similar vein. What's funny is as I understand it, it's literally an analogy for the period of time predating Christ's eventual return? In this respect, I suppose humans are all still very much "the child," a species of (spiritual) non-grownups.

corinthians are epistles from paul to a new and fractious church community. whilst early parts of it deal with the return of christ and the apostolic succession (basically, paul establishes via theological reasoning as to just why the fuck they should listen to his cranky slap-down that comes in the ensuing letters), the vast majority of the letters are concerned with day-to-day realpolitik and managing the religious community.

of course everything considered biblical canon can be seen as metaphorical and elaborated upon in an exegetical manner (especially if you're reading a beautiful dressed-up translation like the KJV). but, actually, the majority of the letter to the corinthians is just detailing how they should sort out their fucking business and behave. like, for instance, growing the FUCK up.

on a quite obvious level, a lot of it is premised on 'now you have come into knowledge of the truth, etc', and the earliest churches, particularly in the anatolian hinterlands where they were a bunch of hicks and rubes, were quite literally waiting for jesus to come back, like, next week or something. i think paul or possibly john had to continually revisit the area to check they weren't getting too impatient and wandering away from the church back to their pagan ways. but the 'advice', such as it was meted out, was in fact more practical than 600 years of medieval-scholastic elaboration would have you believe. it wasn't really intended that metaphorically for the corinthians.

If Jesus returns in an Akira t-shirt with a box of pocky, we'll all look very silly.
