Jenga podium, lol.
Have to give the U.K. credit for having multiple women PMs. Broke the color barrier too. Too bad their PODIUMS are stupid.
the plural of podium is podia.SuperJail Warden wrote:

you really shouldn’t be educating children.

in fact when i’m struggling with a point of usage or grammar at work, i frequently wonder what reddit commenters are saying. the OED gathers dust. how does user /u/mydoghaswhitepoopoolol deal with this matter?
It's also podiums though, at least according to a few listings (Britannica (arcitecture), MW).
This is a word that's probably better to give up on, really. It's probably only niche circles like this where we argue about lecterns and podiums. I would be surprised to meet anyone in real life who bats an eye at podium's expanded meaning.

i have already stated more than once than the MW is an arriviste in the dictionary world and acts as a guide for US-Eng by default.
it’s like asking a little punk kid who is addicted to Smarties for dietary advice. please stop citing the merriam-webster at me, illiterate yanks.

Also Cambridge. OED online doesn't even have a listing for plural that I saw. Both of these also list it as synonymous with lectern by the way.
You're the editor so you know best or whatever, and you don't need us arguing with you about language shift. But there's probably a limit to how important venerability is here. People who wrote dictionaries 200+ years ago couldn't conceive of the world today and the rapidly changing words being used in it anyhow. Not that podium being used for lectern is anything super new.
e: This whole argument is apparently an old meme: https://www.vocabulary.com/articles/wor … e-lectern/ referencing it as a pet peeve all the way back in 1961, nearly predating my parents. About the same brow level as the math meme about in-line division.

of course it’s a meme dumbass. do you think i’m really vexed about illiterate americans and the use of educators’ furniture? JFC.
i can guarantee you’ve spent more time in your life at this point actually looking up podiums in reference guides than i ever have.
it’s standard usage difference in US/UK english to insist on the actual latinate root of things. americans struggle with adapting words for plural in any other way than adding -s. how many enyclopediums did you check today?

I mean you sounded pretty vexed.
It being a meme isn't news to me. I just confirmed that people were arguing about it since before I was born, because I never cared to verify it before you, in your vexation, turned it into an issue here.

I'll check as many encyclopediis as it takes.uziq wrote:

Fuck Israel
the UK govt currently has a hindu PM, a christian chancellor, a buddhist home secretary, and a jewish secretary of state. 4 of the highest offices in the state. interestingly, the hindu PM will be in charge of appointing bishops and filling senior ecclesiastical roles in our christian king's own church.
in the case of the conservatives, it seems that despite race, religion or creed, you really can 'integrate' and become every bit as meanspirited, nasty and xenophobic as the very worst of Little Englanders.
who says multiculturalism has failed, dilderp? truly an inspirational story for all second-generation children of immigrants.

Maybe its just religious people who are mean-spirited and nasty?
Isn't that the point of religion? An excuse for people to put themselves above everyone else?

because, as we all know, the non-religious and expressly atheistic never devise meanspirited or nasty societies.
speaking of which, hasn't it been all of 3 days since you made a hitler or stalin analogy?

At least they're not divided societies.

the UK isn't really divided along religious or racial grounds, either. only in your febrile and over-active little imagination. the fact that the cabinet are made up of multiple faiths and races, which don't interfere with their political vision or cooperation, would kind of suggest so ... don't you think?
and, yes, those all-so-neat-and-tidy atheistic societies from the mid-20th century. where everyone just magically had the same views and opinions and were united. what happened to all the dissenting voices and people who didn't fit in with the majority opinion, i wonder?
week 574 in dilbert's long road to fascism.
