I believe if a sufficiently large project is broken even a year from release, it's probably going to be broken upon release. Those little disclaimers you see in dev footage (apha/beta not representative of product at full release) are so often code for "we'll kinda/sorta fix after it's released. Meanwhile, make sure you get your pre-order in for the digital deluxe and season pass." In all my experience with patch-age video games, bug squashing is so often neglected as a priority, and bad documentation habits of programmers don't make it any easier to achieve.

Yea...Halo worked, besides some azure netcode issues that plague some MS games, but was missing so many planned features. One year later and theyre almost there!

Rome Remastered is so good. So so good. I was really critical of the UI changes at first but some of the additions are really nice and nothing is too bad though it can sometimes be confusing where to find the thing you need.

9/10

Favorite Roman?

I, Claudius is probably my favorite Rome-centric show.

What do you think of the remaster vs Rome 2?

I didn't like Rome 2 at all. The world map was too dark and brown. The mechanics were worse across the board.

I could look past everything but the ridiculously limited building slots. You should be able to build most of everything if you have the funds.

The only explanation I can think of for that is that someone thought it would be smart to streamline the building features in order to focus on battles.

Real focus on battles when you're constantly addressing squalor or whatever because you decided on a barracks over baths. It would be more streamlined I guess if cities were represented in a way where far less buildings shared slots. Slot caps are so stupid in so many games.

me: *bother logging onto steam*
steam: *takes a minute to start* "there's an update and your client needs to restart"

I also hate that I have to uncheck "remember me" every time I log on. Why doesn't it just remember my preference for that? I know there's probably a command line parameter somewhere, but I don't feel like modifying a the shortcut for that.

Last night it was windows reminding me of the need to restart for an update. I clicked later. Look away for five seconds, it's signing off for a restart. Oh good, now to wait five minutes doing absolutely nothing.

I've talked about uplay annoyances before. Two uplay accounts (one made because I'd forgotten the original), both tied to steam. The last one I log into will be the one Steam puts any new games onto. I have the credentials for both uplay accounts, but ubisoft will not merge them or offer some other sort of solution. In order to avoid continually splitting my library, I've hidden the two steam games tied to the old uplay account, and so never log onto it anymore. Pretend it doesn't exist. What a solution.

I would not have this problem with a CD-ROM from 1997. Patch convenience is wonderful, but game services love screwing with ya. Get out of here with the spyware as well. Every dev and their mother implementing FOMO events. Who can keep up? Mario 3 didn't have one-time-only events where you have to grind to get a year-exclusive Santa hat or spreadfire fireflower before it's too late and they're gone for good.

The Rome Remastered is a masterpiece. I was extremely critical of the UI changes but once I got used to them it became evident how great of a job they did with the game. I believe they also did some good patching. You get Rome and the two expansion packs too. Excellent value buy.

I cannot recommend it enough.

Rome, alongside Napoleon, were the Total War games I enjoyed most. Tried to get into Shogun 2, but I think I had other stuff on my plate at the time. Never tried Three Kingdoms, or the Warhammer ones.

RTS has been getting some decent remasters as of late. One of the last I played was the C&C one. Good stuff, made with care.

I assume Medieval Total War II, my favorite, is also going to get a remaster. Excellent.

I'm hoping Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun get remasters at some point.  I can't see EA not doing a remaster of RA2 at the very least, it was the high point of Westwood RTS games.

Also, the new Company of Heroes is looking pretty good, I'm surprised to see that they're even doing a console version of it too.

After Dawn of War 3 and even CoH2, I have restrained enthusiasm. Russian commentators at the time rightfully pointed out that the Soviet Union got the cartoon villain campaign, while the Germans were treated to their noble retreat. Also, I feel like RTS has stagnated as a genre in the already stagnant environment of video games in recent years. It would not surprise me to see DLC content that should have been in the first release get slowly trickled out to consumers greater priority than bug and balance fixes. Gaming suuuuuucks.

I'm kind of surprised to see Gotham Knights is already going for half off on Steam during this Winter sale, I've heard a lot of bad things though, and the gameplay and voice acting in particular both seem shitty to me compared to the Arkham games.

It still bothers me that accounts can't by license be passed to friends and family. Imagine if CD/DVD or cartridge games from days before key activations worked like that. "Sorry, into the void these go." I reckon by now the Steam accounts of some BF2S users have passed the 5-figure mark in terms of dollar value. But what an impermanent investment.

Steam probably skims enough off the top of game sales to account for like three individual sales on some competing platforms.

There is Family Sharing but from looking at the FAQ on that page, there are quite a few restrictive caveats.

I don't know if there's a way to batch-enable all your games for sharing. Imagine having to do so for each of like 1000 games collected over nearly two decades, and more, moving forward. Blegh.

Another reason to share an account after death is so that someone can maybe leave an epitaph on your profile. Even if your games are left unplayed, at least people in the future won't see "5000 days since last online" and wonder if you're still in the land of the living. I've got some of those on my friends list and hope they just got busy with life or something. Also, probably a few who vanished during COVID.

Being interred with your digital riches like a modern-day Pharaoh, what a time to be alive.

Maybe eternity has PCs that can run Crysis.
