What's the difference between Carbines and Assault Rifles?

I mean, in BF2 and in real life. In BF2 i know that assault rifles do way more damage than Carbines, and Carbines are more accurate than Assault rifles... but that's in the game, and it was probably done as a balance issue. So what's the REAL difference between them?

Carbines are smaller versions of assault rifles, they tend to do have a shorter range and decreased damage of their assault gun variant. Due to the shrunken size of the carbines, they tend to be lighter and more compact, resulting spec. ops. forces to use them in smaller spaced regions or when they are going stealth, doesn't need to carry a big or heavy gun as they sneak through enemy lines etc. The accuracy in small/medium range holds better than an assault rifle due to it lightness in the user hands, but suffice long range accuracy due to the smaller bullet caliber and gun mechanism can't seem to push enough force for a bullet to accurate travel a long distance. Also, due to small bullet caliber, the guns are weaker than their assault rifle counterpart.

Examples of Assault Rifles and their Carbines

SCAR-H
Carbine: SCAR-L

G36K (Yes it is an assault rifle)
Carbine: G36C

M-16
Carbine: M-4

AK-47/ AK-74
Carbine: AK-74U

L85A1
Carbine: SA-80 (I think)

Well, they are based from assault rifles. They also use smaller rounds due to their size and decreased range and damage. They generally are made in the same family of popular rifles.

Carbines are shorter in length, with a shorter barrel etc. and are designed for use in confined spaces. Assault rifles are longer, with a longer barrel, designed for general use and will do more damage due to a longer barrel, not a larger bullet.

For those who say the carbine has a smaller bullet, can I have a link to some examples please? eg. The M4 still uses the same size round as the M16, which is its assault rifle variant.
