AI will replace all the rote tasks of copy-writing and reportage for the big associated press-style wire communications. it will replace copy-writing for most corporate uses and basic communicative english, e.g. instruction manuals and promotional material. it won't replace a good book editor, though, because they bring much more to the table than grammarly-esque fixing of semi-colons and dangling participles. it's a collaborative relationship and AI is not going to give good direction on structure or developmental editing.
typesetting and printing aren't done by a publishing house, by the way. even a lot of the more rote production-related tasks were offshored in the beginning of the digital desktop publishing era, nevermind AI. and that is a shame for all those quality typesetting companies and printshops based in the UK. we have tried to maintain a relationship with our norwich-based printer but the future is looking bleak.

that really sucks though.
there was a short phase where i wanted one (a motorcycle, not a crippling skeleton injury) to save on gas. certainly wouldn't save on medical/funerary if i slid under someone's car. idea went into the bin. leave that stuff for video games, where you can rocket-propel yourself halfway across los santos and still have a decent chance to get back up again.

had a cousin from my side of the family in south africa who was left with a life-changing brain injury from a bike accident. wasn’t his fault - came around a corner on the highway at speed and an articulated lorry was doing a u-turn in the road. this must have been SA in the late 80s or early 90s. nightmare fuel. that cousin ended up jumping off the roof of a high tower in joburg. could probably find an archived news article about if i tried. suffice to say nobody in my family from my grandmother on down would allow me to have a motorcycle. my father still had a few ducatis and motoguzzis (sp?) in his time. the noise they made was enough to scare me away. you could hear the 1100cc sport ones from a village away.
coupled with my brother having his life just about ended in a land rover, and having to sit next to that and around the fallout of countless other mortally wounding and maiming accidents through my 20s.
at least i’ve been cured of the male weakness for obsessing over and wasting huge amounts of money on libidinal purchases/depreciating assets like cars. could not care any less about owning a fancy vehicle or making ownership of one my personality.

i would rather be in a car that has performed rather well in collision tests, in case of, you know, a collision. obviously, drive like you don't want to be in a collision, and don't trust anyone around you to not put you into one.

Sometimes I wish i lived in a walkable area. Californians make cars part of their personality. Its actually really weird. People living in cheap apartments but driving $75k-100k cars is a real thing here.

with a few exceptions i can get most of my stuff done within walking distance if i have time for it.
an issue is a lot of stores don't want you bringing outside backpacks or bags in. this is stupid. walking home from the store with pounds of produce cutting off the circulation in your fingers is not fun. i see some humblebrag about how one of those pedestrian-hostile stores is otherwise committed to climate stuff, and roll my eyes.

bad and good:
bad: bunch of my stuff got stolen from storage. thieves cut their way in. maybe 4k in tools and books collected over the years. probably much less for resale.
good: it's all gone. i don't have to go through any of it. i'm not responsible for hazmat or cleanup. the boxes i had locks on were all busted open and abandoned there, destined for the dumpster. i no longer have to think about having stuff in different spots, or paying for storage, or moving it around. freeing, really. one step closer to digital nomadism.
so, less annoyed than i thought i'd be. some people in my circles were more annoyed, on my behalf. i've been thinking of it in positive terms all day. maybe the stolen stuff bought someone something they needed, or brought someone happiness (i wasn't doing much with it). in addition, it's not like i had everything i own burn away in a big fire or flood.
the books, at least, i'll maybe buy replacements for over time in deep discount digital copy. there might've been a console game or two in there but heck if i can remember.

i would be most bothered about the time lost in finding and selecting all those books, but i'm assuming they weren't in your primary residence for a reason in the first place.

it's a mix of some of things. there's ambivalence since they didn't make the cut for my main place, but then, i didn't sell/donate either. my stuff was mostly split due more to space constraints, but it wasn't like i set out to get rid of them? still:
if someone is desperate enough to haul that much weight in paper through a hole in a building (and there's a mental image, thieves herniating themselves with bags of that stuff; it wasn't lightweight, i can attest), i can only hope that the thieves and maybe wherever it's being fenced have kept that stuff clean and dry. it would suck for years of collecting to just go into the gutter. but i have my doubts that i was robbed by a bibliophile.
@ken, honestly, it could have been my place just as easily broken into. i'm glad that didn't happen and that i wasn't held at gunpoint for a bunch of DVDs or something. but yeah, hindsight, i should have probably went through long before and pulled out some of the good stuff. grr!

since the pandemic it really feels like petty crime and larceny has been majorly downgraded in the west. the UK seems to be blighted by shoplifting and forms of day-to-day anti-sociality and the police are nowhere to be found. even major chains that deal with regular theft get advised to hire in toothless private security outfits that can't even put their hands on a person committing a crime in progress. it's effectively open day on all forms of theft under 4-figures. toothpaste now has security tags. the check-out in the local co-op now resembles a liquor store in the southside of chicago. you have to shout to the little old lady through a heavy perspex cage to tell her you want your weekly lottery scratch-card. it's all very dispiriting.
i have never been so glad to jump ship from a low-trust to a high-trust society. the difference is night and day. the waves of relief and wellbeing that come with it are not to be understated.

My experience growing up with the police is that you had to be careful around them because they will ruin your life for a little bit of weed. Ignorant assholes who will be rude and demeaning.
The fact that the "police don't work anymore" is a positive. Much less likely to get pulled over and given a ticket for some bullshit I didn't do.
