blood meridian is one of the great american novels of last century. art doesn't have to be wish-fulfillment or superhero power fantasies.

you read it for the biblical language and certain tone, the Miltonic lyricism and powers of imagination, and for the memorable characters. not to feel good about the 'what' of its depiction. humanity does terrible shit. spend time in the imaginative space of our monstrosity !!!!
i feel like we've been here before. but i should rephrase that, anyway.

a star wars novel is exhausting.

blood meridian is emotionally draining. sometimes you're not in the mood to follow a bunch of sadistic characters on their adventures. doesn't mean it's bad, or that novels shouldn't be difficult in their own various ways.

recommend.

may it never be a movie.

Told the dental hygienist I preferred toothpicks to floss as floss needs two hands and I can use a toothpick while holding a book.

"You read books? What is that, like a hobby or something?"

"Yeah, yeah it is"

i'm fairly certain they know what books are.

i heard a clerk deadpan mention that the dubious, gross mattress blocking the store sidewalk was used by staff for breaks.

the weird part in all this is hearing that you engaged with someone even peripherally on books, at all, after the story about how you stomped out of the bookstore when a clerk wanted to talk about the book you were buying (starship troopers?).

My girlfriend uses a water pick floss. Consider getting one of those.

my dentist's office markets those but still suggests regular floss. i suppose a water pick could be a good finishing touch.

I got this book for Christmas. It is about the presidents from Prager U. I went to the Obama and Trump articles and it is absolutely what you expect. I had a loud hardy laugh when I got to the back cover.

I have a $100,000 in student loans. I am very alive though. Charlie Kirk would still be alive if he had just signed up for the "college scam."

...

Guess how much this book MSRP is.

guessing 30-40 usd or the price of a stick of string cheese for amazon audio.

what the heck kind of job are you going to get from prageru? can you even get a valid clown certificate?

there's a prageru kids' material and it's about what you'd expect as well. dubious aunts and uncles leaving reviews about how their nieces/nephews loved it.

is he a 5th grader or a pensioner wtf

amazon's spammed with this shit. look at this:

we're in the marvel movie ranking genre now, lmao

"rooted in conservative values" meaning never challenges or upsets conservative readers.

what an opportunity for a troll book though. you could put a cover like this on it, and then when you open it up, all the newest hits are like D tier and below.

That cover and probably the entire book is AI slop.

Publishing a book lost it's meaning to me. I don't think people are embarrassed by it anymore.

publishing a book with a serious publishing house is still a flex.

amazon publishing has been a joke for a long time before generative AI crap.

No-one would ever open it, half the purchasers probably can't read, you could publish it in lorem ipsum and no-one would know.

I watched th movie Wuthering Heights with my girlfriend. I really didn't like the male love interest. I don't understand why the rich guy she married didn't have the guy broken in half way as soon as he showed back up.

barely even related to the book. the director had to pull some lame PR move and say that the movie title was 'given in quotation marks' or something, because it strays so far away from the original.

it's basically an extension of the female porno-slop that passes for 'books' on tiktok.

I heard an interview where the director said she cast Heathcliff based on the cover of the version she read.

One of the only memories I have of the story is just how terrible Catherine and Heathcliff were as people.

have no particular strong feelings about the book one way or another - haven't read it since i was about 16, which seems about the appropriate age for such things - but the main characters in the book are basically teenagers and very young adults for the majority of the plot. worth bearing in mind when considering all that gnashing of teeth and lashing by rain on the moors, etc. they're hormonal, horny little teenagers.

that said, yeah, there is a weird undercurrent in the book where bronte seems to conceive of men at their most manly when they are being brutish and sexually violent. all the 'respectable' bourgeois male characters in the book are effete and/or consumptive weaklings. it's an interesting little artifact in the history of romanticism (and her sister's books are practically the polar opposite, all prudence and detachment, etc., like the yin and yang of early 19th century sensibilities).
