My assistant proudly said she wasn't upset about SNAP being cut since it had for a lot of people "become a lifestyle where every generation gets food stamps." I didn't bother arguing.

The vice principal's office has a giant pile of donated canned goods. There's some food drive going on. I donated some cans of tuna fish I am never getting around to eat.

I have total main character energy. I forget that the students have home lives and their own sets of problems. Problems bigger than learning about Operation Barbarosa. Some of the kids I will be dealing with are going to go hungry. I probably should be doing more to help.

In regards to the shutdown, my assistant is now upset that kids are going hungry. She and the Indian teacher gave their lunches and snacks to the kids since free school food is getting cut off. Kids are going hungry in school.

I just listened and didn't take part in the scramble to feed the students. I gave some cans of tuna fish to the school food drive. But otherwise I am not putting energy in helping a Trump voter fix the problems caused by their own voting.

Democrats shouldn't budge on this. Let the Republicans kill the filibuster to remove healthcare subsidies. Let the Republicans own the economic collapse.

no strong opinion. east asia has a weird relationship with trump/MAGA. lots of pro-MAGA protests in korea while i was there. japanese politics similarly have to be comprehended in their own way. not at all the same dynamic as a trump visit to the UK/EU, where most right-thinking and educated types naturally have disdain for the whole thing.

the clannishness of korea has to be seen to be believed. most of their presidents in the middle of the 20th century appointed cabinets and heads of government departments who were not only from their 'loyal' region of choice, but often literally from the same graduating class of a high-school or military academy. entire political parties and family dynasties are inseparably linked to a home region; for instance, gyeongsang province (on the south-east coast of korea by busan and the historical centre of daegu) has given something like 7 out of the last 10 presidents. it's every bit as insular and networked as eton/oxford and prime ministers/cabinet.

i'd call it bad optics for trump on the homefront, but his people want him as king and he, or his social media people, are posting ai slop memes of his crowned self and massive amounts of scat in the same scene, shitting on the american people. nothing is below him.

so new york and london, the two great metropoles of the western world, now have muslim mayors (something i have no objection to, just for the record).

ironically, both mayors represent a left-of-centre 'alternative' brand of politics to the mainstream. whodathunk it?!?

i remember spending about 5 years in the backwash from the bush years telling dilbert and co. that there's a whole bunch of integrated, modern, cosmopolitan muslims (like the one i was house-sharing with, and who was in a relationship with my best friend at the time). that having a muslim for a neighbour isn't something to automatically fear or raise suspicion, et cetera et cetera.

of course, identity shouldn't prove anything and we should move away from that era of liberal politics altogether i think. let their political careers live and die by their policy choices and actions, not their ethnicity/creed or some sappy 'america's got talent' back story.

but quite a weird situation that downstream of several decades of islamophobia – and the day after its architect, cheney, dies, natch – we now have basically two 'soft left' muslim mayors entering the political mainstream. the deeply entrenched elite networks all have neuter politics that mean fuck all. young and working people want an alternative.

i'm not sure what it bodes for the future, as municipal and mayoral elections are very much their own thing in the UK ... until they're not.

the mayor of manchester in the UK, who is not an actual member of parliament anymore, is being touted as a replacement for flailing starmer. another resoundingly left-of-center, pre-neoliberal type of politician. it remains to be seen if we can actually formulate a way forward that doesn't just revert to the centrist watered-milk of the late 90s/early 00s; or, of course, the alternative path through populism and demagoguery, which is polling extremely, extremely well in the UK's non-metropolitan heartlands at present.

btw this is totally irrelevant, but i've been showing my other half the sopranos now that the cold, dark early evenings are ushering in. she went to grad school in new york and worked in new jersey for a couple years. turns out she lived like 0.5 km away from the real-life bada bing, in hackensack (sp?) that's too funny to me.
