@Uzique

The UPS and Amazon layoffs go hand in hand. Amazon has their earnings report tomorrow and I expect they will miss their expectations in regards to revenue growth. Amazon probably saw a decline in consumer spending and that affected UPS which relies on Amazon and other e-commerce.

The middle class will get angry and blame immigrants and the poor harder. That's all that will happen. Trump is just too cool. He goes to UFC events and sits front row with Elon Musk.

I see government workers who lost money because of Republican policies vote for Republicans harder. I don't blame them. Who would you rather vote for? The full testosterone Republican male that will cut your pension and benefits?

Or would you rather vote for a white Jewish woman (Karen) who will increase aid to schools?

I rather be walked to the door by the Republican.

all the fake 6-figure email jobs are vanishing. only, unlike the post-covid labour market contraction, where all the jobs being axed were (women-coded) ‘project management’ and ‘comms’ roles - cue months of gloating by (men-coded) engineers about worthless overpaid girlbosses sipping drinks by pools during their workdays - these jobs being lost are hitting the STEM junkers squarely on the jaw.

this is going to be a bloodbath and the outcomes will be politically toxic, within the next few years. i genuinely believe the fallout from these changes, not to mention the AI bubble popping, is going to radicalise some of the most potent demographics in society. historically speaking, it’s not the poor downtrodden proles and dispossessed of the world who rise up, or the ‘workers of the world!’ who unite (pace marx) - but the middle-class who sour and curdle when they get squeezed. almost all major political shifts or herniations happen when the educated, previously upwardly mobile, previously affluent middle-class get disaffected.

and here you have the poster children of ‘go to college and learn to code/become an engineer’, who have been feted for their intelligence and good life choices all along, finding themselves unemployed … because of a golem of their own creation.

and all this to help enrich a tiny cadre of billionaires and bosses, whose best hope for all the upwards-hoovered capital is to deploy it to get the fuck outta dodge and build mars bases or floating tax-free sea colonies, or something. talk about the good of society, eh?

also, lol: the number one user of openAI/chat-gpt is … mckinsey. the corporate world really are handing over billions of dollars to chat bot power users to relay and launder the LLM’s bullet point analyses as powerpoint presentations or whatever. the whole corporate world ticks over on literal nothingness.
Little bit of a stretch to say those job cuts are predominantly STEM, I don't think the golden age of the STEMlord is quite over.

AI and robots can take every job, this is the plan and it is supposed to deliver a Utopia, not a small number of sociopathic nerds with all the money.

Amazon should be easy to kill, Loserbook, Tiktok etc the same.
People need to stop using them, I haven't used Amazon in at least 15 years, haven' bought anything from a facebook or youtube advertiser ever, its not hard people.

the layoffs are to do with the cost of rolling out data centres. the mass spend is in the tens of billions per company, and shareholders want to see their bottom line being preserved in the process. it's all-in on AI spend and cutbacks on labour.

AI and robots can take every job, this is the plan and it is supposed to deliver a Utopia, not a small number of sociopathic nerds with all the money.
bertrand russell was saying this stuff over 100 years ago. it is sanguine nonsense. technological innovation and gains in productivity/efficiency have rarely ever inched us loser to 'utopia': there's more bullshit jobs, make-work, inequality and precarity than ever, and more and more concentrated wealth in the hands of the few.

i don't believe for a second that larry ellison or elon musk or jeff bezos or any of the other techno-oligarchs are interested in a future of infinite leisure time for the workers. they are much more interested in 'disruption' and schumpeterian 'creative destruction' so that they can all get very, very rich.

Well I'm not in favour of a hipster's paradise either, people should suffer - for multiple reasons.

I'm hopeful these zeebs are going all-in on AI and data-centres and it bankrupts them. I can't see how the numbers work and people smarter than me are saying its dot com all over again.

"people should suffer." lol.

sitting comfy on your stocks, walk into the gutter and tell some homeless person that they're building character.

if a hipster's paradise is avoiding new fiction reusing phrases like "their eyes softened" and "it wasn't just ___, it was profound" for the umpteenth time because everyone's just using chatgpt to fill in the skeleton of a prompt, sign me up.

there was a conspicuous use of chat-GPT prose in the financial times last week. some columnist or correspondent well and truly phoning it in.

you can spot it from a mile off if you spend any time at all thinking about text and the construction of sentences. it has a very tell-tale syntax: almost its own rhetorical mode. and lots of em dashes, which stick out in uk publications as they are hardly ever used.

the puzzling part is that with a small amount of elbow grease, chat-gpt can be instructed away from those tendencies in your prompting. but there's a reason it's called slop, i guess.

calling it out can make you look like an asshole. who wants to be that person who makes noise about someone's untagged generative content, but then the author (or 'author') deny ai usage, and then the whistleblower is the bad guy whether or not the author is lying. only winning move is to just spit out that sour grape and move on.

sticky stuff. hopefully it'll iron out with less pain than it might. we've been through this with trad/digital artwork, and now each are sets of valid categories.

Some fun things to try with chatgpt

describe what a mechanical engineer does as if you were talking to a 5 year old child

Okay! 😊

A mechanical engineer is like a grown-up who loves to build and fix things that move.

They help make cars go vroom, planes fly, robots dance, and even make sure your toys work!

They think about how things fit together, how to make them strong, and how to make them work better without breaking.

So you can think of a mechanical engineer as a super builder and problem-solver who helps the world’s machines do their jobs! 🛠️🚗🤖

You're thinking of chemical engineers

I  hope you unplug your phone charger when not in use to save power.

i spend less time on my phone in a month than a lot of people do in a day. whatever energy my phone eats is peanuts compared to power tools or driving way out of the deep burbs every time i want to go shopping.

Which is why you need to make sure the charger is unplugged - that parasitic power drain could literally starve to death an embryonic AI somewhere.

A boomer MAGA excoworker got mad at me on Facebook. He threatened to unfriend me.

I copy and pasted his DM into ChatGPT and told it to be polite and de-escalate. It gave me responses and I edited them and sent them to the boomer. He eventually apologized and we had a friendly chat (ChatGPT) afterwards. He just wanted someone to listen to him talk. And a chat bot did a good job of saving me time and saving a relationship.

The Burry Top? Legendary Investor Michael Burry Exits Amid AI Valuation Concerns
No grand announcement, or big show on TV, just a letter saying that he’s closing his firm because he no longer understand market valuations.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamsarhan … -concerns/

"no longer understand market valuations" Is code for "he thinks the valuations are bullshit"

There's another article somewhere where he says overvaluation is followed by ~2 years of overinvestment powered by debt followed by a dramatic crash.

Having lived through the dotcom bubble, the telecoms bubble and probably the tulip bubble I know a bubble when I see one.
Coupled with the potential evaporation of bitcoin this could be unimaginably bad.

peter thiel also sold off basically everything. and masayoshi son of softbank. not good indications for the retail investors who are late to the show.

the yen carry trade is also basically extinct as of this week, the BoJ will have to do very interesting things this month ... the current rate on japanese bonds is unprecedented since pre-2008 levels.

much like covid brought an end to the era of infinite cheap credit and low-interest loans, it looks like japan is going to nuke that particular loophole too.
