Well no idea to be honest but you get funny effects like usage creates heat which drives out moisture which can kill electronics, glue etc.
Disuse allows moisture to penetrate and do damage.

In many cases the glue continues to cure after it leaves the factory.
In some obscure cases the manufacturer relies on the first switch-on to properly cure the glue.

My god I've wasted my life.

i think monitor manufacturing is just a shitshow of poor QC. panels are of hugely varying quality, often shipped with 'bad pixels', etc.

like in audio, there's been a trend of chinese OEM brands offering giant screens with insane specs (retina-frying 1337 gam0r 240Hz refresh rates, etc.) at 1/4 the price of quality monitors from established brands like Dell, and so on. the understanding being that they'll last about 2 years and you are SOL on any warranty claims.

i went with a trusted manufacturer on that basis but still ran into shitty quality control. and the internet is full of complaints about the usual suspects like Samsung, who drove ahead with curved monitor technology and have dealt with lots and lots of returns.

Doesn't Dell just rebadge Samsung? Its a while since I bought a monitor.

I pity the people who bought Chinese cars, the world is going to be littered with these things in about five years.

i'm guessing there's relatively few top-tier panel manufacturing facilities and something similar to CPU binning takes place where the 'premium' brands get the pristine ones. but who knows.

those chinese cars look like great value for money tbh. and leagues ahead of darling brands like Tesla in quality and fittings.

i could actually maybe be persuaded to give a shit about automobiles for the first time in my life if they started releasing attractive city hatchbacks again. i do not want an urban SUV.

Probably the premium brands get the latest production line and the lower ones get the slightly older tech in one vast factory the size of Denmark.

Very few cars appeal to me, most cars are too big or too stupid or both.
Seems to be narrowing to a hybrid forester, maybe a crosstrek if the shit rear FOV is bearable, maybe an outback if I don't care about size and fuel consumption and accept the planet is going to burn.

i'm having a really difficult time getting into movies anymore. sat down to watch some thriller. "i've never seen anything like this before," how many times has that exact line been rolled out by bewildered investigators and coroners in various mysteries and thrillers? paint by the numbers slop. slop from before ai slop. i can't engage with 90+ minutes of it anymore while the characters act all serious. a two minute clip will ruin all motivation i have to see a thing.

Movies aren't made to be watched. They are made to be listened to. Netflix pressures producers to edit their movies for an audience on their phones or doing something else in the background. Matt Damon, who has a new Netflix movie I listened to, was talking about it with a magazine.

i can listen through like 8 hours of audiobook. but even if i'm looking away from a movie, once the slop kicks in i would rather be doing anything else. shoveling water into a dump truck sounds more fun than putting up with a lot of these movies when each one of my attempts uncovers some rehashed, creatively bankrupt schlock.

i'll be hated by made in usa fetishists for saying it, but american cinema suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks so much right now, and i can't relate to that part of people that leans forward and consume it in earnest. maybe it's like becoming acclimated to the moldy leavings in dumpster pizzas because you've never been presented with any other options. please just give me something interesting from literally anywhere else.

There's a colossal amount of slop, and no-one wants to take risks due to the cost of failure.

we all know you wouldn’t bother checking out the high-risk stuff anyway. you’re one of those cultural clod-chewers who likes to flatter himself. ‘pretentious’ art movies!

True but irrelevant.

newbie do you have a non-marvel cinema nearby?

This is what my local has.

the number of theaters (surprisingly, post-covid!) isn't an issue. i'm a reasonable distance from from a selection of places that have old timey and cult classics days (some have closed), with favorable yelp reviews. the places that might sell tickets for like three marvel movies at any given time are also megaplexes that play other stuff. i don't have to look far to find a popular indie playing. there's even playhouses if you're into that.

a problem is price and experience. for a ticket alone, you could buy a dvd. when you account for group tickets (alone!) plus snacks/drinks, the experience shoots into the three figure range easily. several dvds and a filled shopping cart. then you get to listen to other people make noise during dialogue, feel the sticky floor grip your shoes when you shuffle to your seat, the inevitable toddler wailing during a scary scene because the parents didn't want to shell out for a babysitter. does it have an arcade! COOL! 4 quarters to a machine, $2 for the pool table. probably higher in 2026. drains you like a casino or a bar. it's a whole event!

so, apart from the bit where i said that i'm getting weary of a lot of film in the first place, i haven't been to the theater in awhile. since before the donald flu. you could just stream new releases straight to a cheap bigscreen and serve homemade cookies or something.

Parked, paid, come back to a ticket given to me 2 minutes after I paid so I get to waste time disputing that. Not like the agent wasn't 20 feet away the whole time I was paying.

Been very tired of other people at cinema and shows for a long time now.
Not really sure waht goes through their heads, seems to be pure ego and believing whatever they have on their mind is more important than everyone else.

Two of my local cinemas can be rented and will put on any film you want.

I think I'll start doing it at least once a year.

don't get me wrong, being a part of an enthusiastic audience is a positive part of the experience. like think back to the late cretaceous when everyone was watching phantom menace on release night (the small window of time when nobody knew they were supposed to hate pod racing or jar jar binks!). i don't mind people reacting, even applauding or cheering. it's fun! finding a  bunch of fellow watchers like that at other times is a bit random, though. outside-voice susurration, the "hello? oh hi yeah i'm at the movies right now, i can get that into you at about six o'clock" loudly on their phone whether or not they're in the process of stepping out (are they showing off?), people taking out their low attention span on the crinkliest piece of plastic on the planet at that time, stfu!

otoh the minecraft people were kind of asking for it when they went to see a minecraft movie. remember that? fortunately, my ears are blissfully untouched by roars of 'chicken jockey,' and my shirts haven't been soaked by flying, backwash-laced softdrinks. i played the game at one point but i don't recall thinking, "you know, this could really use a movie." no offense intended towards involved talents.

was in another browser today. one-hand "tra" in the address bar as the usual translate-dot-google shortcut. i see the proper link pop up on the lists of suggestions. hit enter. get autocorrected to target

the future is now or whatever

this is stuff i expect from search engines in 2026; the first half of the search results affiliates. i don't know why i'm surprised. windows' own search bar is constantly hocking apps

side note, you'd think these hypermarkets could hire someone to make an actually good website. why are they so bad? i don't want to hear these places whining about amazon when they can't be assed to put out more than barrel-bottom digital infrastructure. seriously, i remember from my online groceries phase getting like two results for soup from a gigastore with three soup aisles

who the heck cares about their mother's maiden name in 2026. is that supposed to be a secure question? don't make me laugh, that stuff's all been in the hands of facebook and leaky data brokers for years.

i bet some people's mothers don't even remember their own maiden name.

ask me for my favorite color or the name of my first pet instead, important document.
