Hi!
I've just installed Fraps for the first time.I made a test video in singleplayer and the framerate drops down to 20,sometimes even lower.Hope multiplayer is still playable that way.

Anyway,what are your settings when you use fraps in-game,is capturing with 20 fps enough for a nice video,is there a way to change the codec fraps is using for recording,etc???

Just post your experiences with fraps so I can get a general overview how to use it.
Because until now there's no real sticky about gamefootage-capturing,using the search just spits outs millions of useless threads.

1 - you can't change the codec
2 - the fps drops because it's chucking MASSIVE amounts of uncompressed data to disk every second...
3 - NO changing the fps it records at to higher doesn't give you higher fps when you hit record
4 - most videos want to be 25~30 so record at 25 for a decent video, if you want to slow mo it, record at higher, eg 50 for half speed 60 for a little slower

it's good but the way it slows stuff down can be very annoying, and the recent builds turn AA off which to be quite honest is a pain in the fucking arse

Basically to record at a high fps with no drop of in-game fps you need a super fast HD and mega amounts of RAM

and even that, which i have, won't help because it still pretty much fucks your fps whenever you record.. even on old games

So,when my fps drops down to about 20 or less anyway - wouldn't it just be useless to record at 25fps?Or do I need to have the 25fps to keep the video in PAL-mode(could be changed in virtualdub later on anyway)?

I've got the demo version and I record at about 40 FPS smoothly with it.. The files are big obviously... 150mb for about 30 secs... I also have the full version which I can't load up

yea pretty much
i think the video that's recorded is probably best at 25~30 tbh

Here's how I record...
In the Fraps settings, Don't record sound, and record "half-screen" instead of full screen. Runs smooth. It's significantly smaller files. the only problem is, For people with 1024x768, the videos are only 512x384... I don't really mind too much because when recording now it runs smooth and I can play normally.

Thx for all the replies.
I just tested some stuff,I made a small video of 2 seconds(just one sniper kill) and then compressed it with VirtualDub.

It was about 8 MB with the fraps codec,after reencoding it with DivX and Mp3 it's only 306 KB.
And in-game it works ok,at least for sniping,haven't tried a jet or a chopper with it.
I get about 30-40 fps without fraps,when I capture stuff it's down to about 20 but it still works,even with sound.

So,it's Sunday and I think I'll get some footage for a first video with music and stuff.
And here we go with the questions again:
I have no fancy movie editing tools,I use VirtualDub for reencoding and cutting so I guess Windows Movie Maker is the only option now.

How do I insert text stuff and add music and all the effect stuff?(Yeah,sounds like a stupid question,I just want a quick overview of how to do it.)
What source of video do I need,the original fraps file or an already reencoded DivX file?
Can it have in-game sound which is later on mixed with the added music or is it better to record without game sound in the first place?
Et cetera,et cetera....just post a bit about what you did when you made your first video.

First off you'll want to use the original video footage, only compress it when it's finished.

Windows Movie Maker is actually one of the most dumbed down programs I have ever used, so I suggest you just play around with it for half an hour, by which time you should have figured out how to do just about everything it can do.
Yes you can add additional sound tracks to the original video file, so you can still have all your BF2 sounds and some funky BGM at the same time if you so wish, you just load up the sound file (wav, mp3, whatever) then drag it to the movie timeline thingy at the bottom of the screen and place it where ever you want it, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

i had the same problem as well... there are a few registry keys that u should delete in order to get it working...if u uninstall fraps, delete the keys, and reinstall the full version it should work... i had probs with the last release when trying to open it, but once i got the newest version it worked fine
