Ok, here's his specs,

ASUS A7V8X
Athlon XP 2100+ (1733MHz 133FSB) Can't seem to get it to overclock for some reason
1 stick 512MB Kingston 3200
Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9550 128MB
XP-Home
6Mb down 384Kb up Cable connection w/o router, direct to modem connection
built-in sound
ATA133 200GB HDD (the newest and fastest part of his computer, and only $60USD!!!)

My Question is this; what, aside from spending money, would help his performance, I'm afraid to force his CPU to give him more, and another friend has the same CPU 256MB more memory, and a Radeon 9200 that runs alot better, is it his memory? or is it what I've suspected it to be his network settings....

here's things we can afford to do, tweak settings, (OC video card, memory timings etc) borrow up to 256MB of ram from a friend who isn't using it... (this one I'm pretty sure we'll do either way just for good measure)

Any reasonable suggestions would be great, I know we should get him a better video card, and 2GB of RAM, but right now we just can't......

Thanks in advance,
Lengoron

Defrag the harddrive?, Renew the Ip?... Turn off other programs eating away at his internet, AIM, XFIRE, TEAMSPEAK, VENTRILO, etc. etc.

512 doesn't quite cut it.  add another gig and it will be night and day difference.

Fresh install on a brand-new HDD, no programs running other than required XP components, so none of those will fix it really, but thanks

I understand this, that's why my machine has 2GB dual channel, however, I'm looking for assistance that doesn't cost money, and technically, the game will run w/ 512, and I've got another 256 stick sitting right in front of me, so he'll have to make due with 768MB..... but is there anything else to get a little more of a boost out of his system?

I'm going over to his place tomorrow to run a BBR tweak test on his machine, to see if I can tweak his networking settings a little, and install this memory for him.... but till then any ideas are welcome.....

my friend has 512 and he gets no lag, it must be something to do with his anti-virus software working in the backround

Cant offer much help.  My game lags up REALLY bad when I get into servers that have over 40 people in them.  I think its my internet service.  I get 6Mbps down, but i think my upload is only like 384k....which is low to me.  Idk what my issue is other than that.  Anything under 40 people, it runs great, not a problem at all.

Anyway you cut it that's really not enough RAM for this game. When I 'only' had 1 gig I had bad lag as textures loaded (or whatever it is) when I first got in but it's way better now with 2 gigs; and even though I have a poor connection, about a fifth of your friend's, I'm often one of the first five or six into a server!

well I know it wasn't anti-virus software, cause there wasn't any yet, but I put that 256MB stick into his machine, and it was better, besides, you're friend probably has a better video card, and CPU.... but I don't know this for sure....

then I looked into his graphics settings, and everything was either set to Med, or High, so I lowered most of them but his view scale distance cause he's really into sniping, I should have set his settings before I gave him the computer back and told him not to (#&@ with it,

now he's getting playability, I think most of his problem was his settings being too high for his graphics card, but he doesn't know anything about computers, for instance he asked if maybe it was his monitor, which I'm sure can handle the 800x600 he had it set at....

thanks heaps for the help though.....

as for reinstalling the update Logan-x, thanks but Above I noted what fixed it.....
