Ok... someone mentioned that I am a bit 'nade happy while reviewing my stats. I took a look around and came to realize I have quite a few kills in this area. So, here are my official notes on the use and advantages of grenades:
First of all, lets note that a grenade has a useful explosion damage radius of perhaps about 10 feet. Compare that with any kind of rifle (or shotgun) and you can see the upside here. Secondly, you have about 5 of these little beauts unless you're anti-tank. Of course, if you're support, you never run out. Or run with a squad with a support guy and you're in good shape there too.
Ok, now that we've laid some groundwork... when to use grenades? The answer is just about any soft target (non armor) that is more than 5 feet away and less than 50. That having been said, there are a few situations that are excellent for grenades. Here's a list:
1. infantry behind a wall. Don't walk around the wall... lob a nade. Most of us have done this at the hotel in Karkand when enemy is about to cap the flag, no?
2. infantry lining you up for a shot (especially snipers & support). They're lining you up for a shot and all of a sudden, here comes this exploding pineapple. What are they going to do? Keep shooting at you or get the hell out of the way? Either they die trying to shoot or they move. If they're not dead... that's when you either 1) lob another 'nade or 2) pull out your G36 and take 'em out.
3. you killed an enemy infantry that's probably near one of his medics (aka he's in a squad). Christ, what is that medic going to want to do even more than having sex? Revive that dude, of course. What's the medic's worst nightmare? A grenade that landed right on top of the body he's reviving. If you're lucky, he revived the guy only to have you kill him again (and the medic).
4. Stationary FAVs, vodniks, humvees. These take about 2-3 grenades to take out. Don't waste your time giving away your location by lobbing nades at armor. You'll just get yourself killed.
5. Going into unknown enemy territory with good chance of enemy infantry? lob a grenade behind the wall you're about to go around. Lob a grenade over the hill you're about to top.
6. Infantry on top of building. If they're on a roof, they're probably a sniper. And if they're a sniper, they have a claymore at the top of the ladder you would otherwise climb. What to do? Lob a grenade, of course. This takes practice with your throw though as you need to gauge angle and strength of throw. Throw too far, and you probably sent it over the building onto your teammate on the other side (who's probably throwing a grenade back the other way). Throw it too low, and it will hit the wall and land in your lap (this happens to me more than I'd like).
7. Someone chasing you around a building? Take out a grenade and left click. This will drop the nade right there... but keep running! With any luck, the guy chasing you runs to your little present at just the right time. Chasing problem solved.
That's about it for me on grenades. Be prepared to take on some TKs though... those grenades don't give a hoot about whether you threw them at an enemy or friendly and they're all dead just the same. Sometimes playing medic can help you out of these inadvertant episodes by reviving the guy (who probably just punished you anyways).
