Maybe it's my JS (Ms Sidewinder) but I prefer mouse and KB for chopper flight and the JS, of coure, for planes. I need to hop on an empty server and mess with the choppers using the JS.
I just feel more steady and can perform finer changes with the KB and mouse.

nothing but keyboard here.
Ditto.  I tried a stick for choppers, but could never hover very well.  I tried mouse, but that didn't work too well either.

I use a big combination of mouse, joystick and keyboard.

Joystick for the throttle ( I leave it at about 30% so that if I let go of everything, the chopper stays steady)

Keyboard for throttle (up and down) and steering (a and d keys)

Mouse to move the chopper

This is the easiest way I found.

Thanks for all the comments. i thought buying an X52 stick would make me a better pilot....
I use the Saitek X52 system... I use the full set-up with jets (on the extremely rare occasion I try one - I suck at them) What I have found useful is the throttle component in combination with the mouse. WIth all the buttons they have it is easy to set up flares, left and right, etc.  on the throttle unit and just use the mouse for steering and firing. That makes hovering and everything much easier for me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. All the good pilots use mouse and keyboard. The key to getting good is learning throttle control. Not buying a joystick.

Probably a dumb question, but I have tried to pilot the chopper with the kbd and mouse.  I like the control much better for finer movments.  However I can't get the throttle control down.  Its always all or nothing. There is no way to set it for a certain speed or anything.  Any suggestions for improved throttle control using the kbd?  Any help would be appreciated.

I always use a joystick. The reason for this is I simply cannot fly with a mouse and keyboard! I'm a fan of flight sims and so using a stick is just what I'm used to. Using a proper flight yoke I get better throttle control, with rudder and weapons all on the stick. Admittedly I'm not the best pilot ever (read: I'm awful) but I'm certainly better with the stick than without!
