Hi

I've recently seen a new card on the market (7950gx2) but to me it appears to be two 7900gt's GPU's on one card?

My question is does anyone know whether it is worth the purchase at the moment? How would it compare to two 7900gts running sli or one 7900gtx???????

No way of really saying right now, because I know of no benchmarks released yet.I would estimate 7900gt in sli performance?

I don't know the answer, but I will add one quick thing. A friend of mine got a 7900GTX, and it was stuffed (artifacts everywhere, until it just shits itself and crashes). The store tested it, found it defective and then replaced it with another one from a differnet manufacturer (they were Winfast and Asus, respectively) - same problems.

Now I have put an XFX 7900GT in my rig (from a different store), and guess what, now I've also started getting artifacts, though only on one map so far...

Grrrrrrr!!! the 7900 model might be a bit dodgey...

Indeed many problems have been reported with them, getting artifacts.And not being able to overclock without crashing.

Are you OCing the video card?
I'm running an evga 7900gt now (was running a 7800gt) and I'm not getting any artifacts.  I also have not OCed the card, and have only played for maybe 2 or 3 hours since I got it.
I read a few places that the problem with the 7900gt was a driver issue.  Are you running the latest 84.21 driver?

No oc, brand new card, latest drivers.

The map I mention is Iron Gator. So far, artifacts (one really really bad one) on three out of four round since I put it in...

I would be very very happy indeed if it's just a driver issue. I am going to do a format this weekend (for other reasons), so I will see if anything changes once I reinstall.

Just out of curiosity, could you mention what kinds of fps you're getting, on what settings? I have currently got the first four options on High, with everything else on Low or Off, no AA, and i'm getting anywhere between 50-80fps. Reading reviews, I see that this card is supposed to get more than this with everything maxed out, so I'd be curious about your experience in the settings/fps department...

I didn't even look... I'll check next time I'm in.
My 7800gt was getting around 50ish with everything on high and was getting 99 most of the time with AA off, shadows, and lighting low, but everything else high.
I'm not even sure what my settings are right now... let me check...

According to many, the 7950 is the fastest "single-unit" solution. I haven't looked up any benchmarks comparing it with two 7900GTX's, though, but it seems to me as the 7950 is clocked down just a tad that it may run a bit smoother. It is certainly cheaper than a pair of 7900GTX's. And just by looking at the stats, I'll bet it'll out-perform a pair of 7900GT's.

Still, with the G80 on the way (probably with an eventual 8(x)00GX2 release), with its GDDR4 and DX10 support, I'm not too interested in an upgrade at this point. But then again, I'm still sitting pretty with my BFG 6800 Ultra OC AGP.

I was getting some artifacting on shiraqi last night...  with the settings above I was only getting in the mid 90s fps.  Still very good, but not an improvement from the 7800gt.  Maybe I should keep my 7800 and get rid of the 7900... not sure what to do now, since there's a MIR on the 7900 and I have to cut the box to get my $$.

I didn't think to as the first time... but do you have the pci-e power plug plugged in?  I know it's a stupid question, but you'd be surprised.  Back in the 6800 days when the extra power to the video card started it was a common thing for someone to forget.

The 7900 gt and gtx have hardware problems with the cards. I know becuase I've had them both. There are people out there that have RMAd their cards 6-8 times and still have not gotten a good one. Theese problems and a lack of a fix, are well documented on Evga s forums. I suggest you check them out. Not a recommended buy right now.

I am currenttly using the the new 7950, theese cards DO NOT suffer from the problems of the other 7900 series cards. Andtech has benchmarks on their site for the 7950. It really is a killer card. If you are playing at resolutions at 1600x1200 or higher with AA on and all of the goodies, than you will se a huge imporvement.

In my opinion, I'm very glad that I didn't mess around with RMAing (got a refund) the 7900gtx, and went straight for the 7950. It also overclocks like a beast as well. I'm currnetly running it a 7900gtx speeds with zero problems. Its worth every cent.

@slo5oh: yeah, the pcie cord is in, and the psu is a 550w antec neo he, so it should all be fine. i might try and swap the cord for the spare one just in case, and plug into one of the spare plugs of the psu, but i don't think this is the problem...

i'll see if the format does anything, but in the meantime, here is a couple of screenshots of the artifacts i mentioned. i've played a couple of times since, with no problems though...    :s

That artifacting is nothing like mine. I'm (was... i'll explain) getting the black triangles.  Certain landscapes would flash black for a fraction of a second, back again, and black again.  I never took a screen shot, but it was the same artifacting I got on my 6600gt when I OCed it too far.  I started thinking that maybe it was lack of power so I swapped out the antec 350 with an antec smartpower 500 (yea, I know I have a lot of stuff sitting around) and I'm not getting the artifacting anymore (only played 4 or 5 rounds though) and my FPS is back up between 90 and 100 all the time.  I'm not saying it's fixed yet, but I'm crossing my fingers.  If I were you I'd install coobits and try increasing the speed to see if your artifacting gets worse.  Maybe try slowing it down some to see if it gets better.  If it does then it's just overheating.  The stock fan on all these cards suck anyhow, so if it's overheating get a zalman vga cooler (about $30) and you're done.

Slo5oh, just so you know, from what I have read on many, many forums, there is no way for a person to fix the artifacting problem, other than to RMA it and hope you get a good one. If you want a 7900, wait till they come out with a fix for it, or go for the 7950.

I'll consider that, but like I already said... mine seems to be working correctly for me now.  As I described above the artifacting I was getting is the exact same thing myself and others have reported getting when OCing a card a little too far.  That combined with my lower FPS is what made me think it might be insufficent power.
If you'd post links to these other forums or threads I'd be grateful.  One can never have enough information.

Youre lucky if you manage to keep it working correctly. Basically EVGA is the best place for info on this sort of thing. THey are not shy about people knowing that the cards have problems coming from the factory. ALL of the cards come from the same place, the manufactures basically put their sticker on them.

Most of the manufactures are keeping this hush hush...XFX even took their forum down because of all the complaints. Nvidia says its an overclocking problem, however this is proven BS. When I had a 7900gtx, it was never overclocked. Many people with the GT versions are having problems as well.

I recommend the EVGA forum for the best info.

Last night I starting getting the shading turn black artifacting again.  There seems to be a lot less and it's not as common as it was with the 350w PS, but a 500w should be enough to push a small horse... off to evga I go.
