Personally I think it's the commander's job to keep his equipment up. You can't expect someone to spawn engineer and sit at your arty all day. You want something done right, do it yourself. The team is busy trying to capture points and as commander you need to lead their entry with arty and supply tanks/apc's. As command you should be able to spot spec ops at your base, with or without a scan, which will give the upper hand in coming behind them and unloading 12 gauge rounds into them.
This is a good example of what is compeltely broken about the game and that teamwork doesn't seem to matter to many. A commander has to defend and repair all commander assets themselves. Very few are willing to help them out. That's just crap.

That brings me to another point, why don't commanders spot? I've had to actually yell at commanders because they refuse to spot and I end up leaving a base I requested uav for which never came, cmdr never spotted there and it ends up getting taken by a lone infantry after I'm 1000m away. I know it sucks to be commanding a team of morons but it's just as bad vice versa.
I actually spot all the damn time. In fact I think I may spot too much because frankly I want to give my team as much info as they can get. Of course most of the time it doesn't matter because for some reason many players have ductape placed over the top right hand corner of their monitors and so the minimap doesn't even exist for them. Grr.

Spotting is an art. I absolutely hate commanders who will spot every darn enemy on the map.

I rely heavily on what I hear. If I hear a tank or car coming, I will look at the small map on the screen to see if it's a friendly tank/car. If nothing shows up on the map, I'll know it's an enemy and I'll turn to wherever the sound is coming from (which is the advantage of using headphones) and act accordingly (usually hide and get my best weapon ready).

Also, if I'm manning a turret I listen for enemies sneaking up from behind (you can actually hear them).

I find nothing more annoying than having to listen to "Enemy infantry spotted!", "Enemy car spotted!", "Enemy sniper spotted!", "Enemy APC spotted!", "Enemy helicopter spotted!" for minutes at end, preventing me from hearing anything else.

As a commander, you should only spot enemies near friendly troops, and only those that they would otherwise miss (and not those they are already engaging). On the "war-front", deploying the RPV is sufficient enough. But, don't deploy the RPV when it's not needed. Better have it available when a squad leader requests it.

I also see a lot of commanders dropping crates at their assets the minute they are destroyed. No good! If they get destroyed, it means there's an enemy spec-op around. He will love you for supplying him with extra C4, and he will blow up the crate just as easily as your assets. When I command, I usually command as an engineer and hide near my assets. When they get destroyed I use my map to find the spec-op who did it and take him out first. Then I will use crates to repair the assets, but only if I'm absolutely sure they are not needed by my troops, otherwise I will repair them by hand. It's much, much faster and I can use the crates for better things.

Believe me if there was a way for me to turn the commander voice off as a player or when I play commander I would. I don't like spamming the channel with Spotted annoucements. I just want to give my team the spotting they need. So either I don't spot effectively or I annoy people with the "Enemy Spotted!" voice over.

Damned if I do and Damned if I don't.

I see the point about the commander 'spotting', but isn't that what everyone should do. Today for instance, I'd been doing my share of spotting so we could take a flag without ANY deaths... it worked really well, until they all left en-masse.... I turn a corner and 'splat' enemy APC. Funny thing is, all the ones that had left the CP must have run straight past it.
So it's not just up to the commander, and you don't NEED to be in a team to 'spot', lone wolf spotting is as good as anyone.

I still maintain, you do not have to be in a team/squad for the round to be successful... but it is up to the individual to help out his 'side' every so often.

You have a good point there . There's been many times when I've needed to listen really hard for either a sniper, or someone about to knife me .... and all I hear is... "enemy this, enemy that, constantly spammed".

I hear ya, voice spam freakin sucks when you're trying to listen for something. It's something you have to do as a commander tho or half the time your team will assume no one's there. And sometimes the spot doesn't actually light up what you wanted everyone to see, so you have to do it again and that when the voice really starts getting annoying.

Played a round tonight and we were getting slaughtered. The commander didn't listen. No supplies, no arty, no UAV...nothing. Thankfully in the end he did listen to one thing...he resigned. (This nex bit isn't to blow my own trumpet...just to prove a point) I took over the commander possition...in about 8 minutes we'd PWN3D them. sweet. *PARP* (sorry, my trumpet went off by accident...honest officer).
I used the same squads and men as him. So...the commander has to take his responsibilites and can't blame every team. Sometimes it's him.

btw...if you are the dude who was playing the commander...sorry for the agro you got, and in retrospect, if it was your first try as commander, or you hadn't been doing it long, then I offer you my appologies...the squad was definately in a state of blood-lust (if that's any excuse). If on the other hand you were the commander and are nothing more than a score-whore....then SCREW YOU loser

I'll have to disagee with the negativity being projected on lonewolfs.  A lonewolf can be quite effective.  Even more effective than a whole squad sometimes.  Lets face it, its very rare to see a squad working as a squad.  Every time I join a squad they are disfunctional.  One guy will be flyin around in a jet.  Another guy will be driving an APC and drive right by me instead of picking me up despite my requests for a ride.  That and the squad leader will never give any orders.  This is why I play as a lonewolf most of the time.  The only benefit of being in a squad is to be able to use the squadrose to ask for a supply drop or UAV.  The key is going after flags period.  Not just the ones where all of the action is at either.  Its hilarious to me to watch people play Karkand and see all of the lemmings going towards the southernmost MEC flag while I drive to the back of their base to capture their main.  Oh does that piss the MEC commander off.
