When I play online I run very slow. I am about 1/2 second behind other players. I get killed a lot.... A whole lot.

If I play single player, it is unbearably slow. It looks like I am processing abot one frame/sec

With the setup below, I think I should be able to play without trouble. Can someone point out what is limiting me.

Gateway Intel Celeron(R) 2.4Ghz
1GB RAM
Nvidia GForce Fx 5500 PCI  256Mb
My typical Ping is <50

Not sure what othe rinfo is needed to determine what I am asking.

Well theres the choice.

Retrofit a well built (but overpriced) PC with a pointless and expensive upgrade!

Or use the sprint button.

I have a dell that works fine for gaming, its your processor, i have a pentium 4 3.0 ghz, upgrade that and  you should be fine. my video card is worse than yours, and i have 512 MB more ram than you. so.. processor and maybe some more ram.

There are things you can do for free to make your PC Run games faster:

3rd Party Graphics Card Drivers
PCI Latency tweak
Disk Cleanup and Defragment
Uninstall old apps
Use FSAutoStartControl
Disable unescassary services and background apps

Your connection is fine. Your system is what is hopeless. People are punning when they're telling you to use "shift to run faster," heh.

Your computer is the issue.

1. Gateway. if I were to give my professional opinion of this company online, I'd be falsely sued for libel
2. Celeron. these CPU's are notorious for their inability to handle resource-intensive software
3. GeForce 5500 PCI. this card is a bit out of date
4. 1GB RAM. while 1GB isn't that bad, it is probably cheap RAM that Gateway overpriced

The solution:

Teach yourself about computers, if you think you can bear to. There's lots of things I buy that I don't know inside-out, but computers, as they break down often and are constantly upgraded, are worth knowing about. Start yourself off with a beginner's book, then graduate to this: Upgrading and Repairing PCs (17th Ed. / Mar.06) I must've recommended these books thousands of times to various people. They're used by techs of all calibers, from noob to expert, student to professor. And visit various sites like AnandTech, etc., to get an idea of what is great and cheap all at the same time. Search forums for computer builds discussed by pros. Finally, acquire and put the pieces together yourself. Order online for better deals, or buy directly from a store for exchanges (in case something goes wrong, you won't have to pay RMA shipping to replace a part).

Or just drain your wallet and buy a Dell XPS, or something from Falcon NW. Never be lulled by Gateway again, even if a bright & shiny salesman says they're the best things since sliced bread.

I'm sure they are OK, but they are overpriced.

Another thing that gets me is that you can't tweak the bios in Dells AT ALL.

Get rid of your spyware.  Also shutdown almost all of your prgrams, like Limewire and Instant Messenger(Keep XFire on if you use it though).  Shut all that stuff down every time you start your computer up and you will see a HUGE difference in gameplay.
