I'm interested in buying the XPS 400 from Dell. One of the options offered for GPU is the Radeon X1900XTX with 512 MB of video ram. However, the Dell XPS power supply is only 375 Watts according to the Dell online manual and the X1900XTX needs 400-450 watts. Can someone please explain? I know that Dell wouldn't offer the card if it doesn't work but it just doesn't make sense.
i'm sure the dell sells their pcs with a PSU that is big enough for their system. Dont worry. But why are you buying an overpriced underpowered pc from Dell. Build it yourself
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
This is good advice just replaced my Dell (Dimension 8400) with an own build, reason being underpowered PSU and the fact that PSU's are bloody hard to replace in Dells.max wrote:

well if something goes wrong, you can always RMA it. Note though that i never had a dell. First a mac, then a few siemens, and now only home build (the one i have now is # 5)cailuc wrote:

Thnx for the advice guys
I know Dell often use Hipro PSUs in alot of there PCs, (I work on alot of the things) and im not sure why It would be hard to replace. People who say Proprietary PSU!!! Apparently havent looked at a dell in quite some time.
Build it yourself ya, but if you feel uncomfortable doing so, the dell's PSU will be ok.
BTW-Hipros IIRC are used in Gateway, HP/Compaq. They are actually decent PSUs.

I have an XPS 400, if you buy an a 7800 GTX or X1900XT you WILL get a 450 Watt Power Supply. They will give you the minimum wattage needed for the card.
I agree with Anubis. I have an XPS 400 and it came with a higher powered PSU than I was quoted on their web site.
Just remember that their PSU, mobo, etc. are custom, so if you ever want to upgrade them, you won't be able to.
I used to have a Dell and wanted to upgrade my video card, but I couldn't as the PSU was too underpowered and I woulda had to use like tinsnips to make a hole in my case for a new PSU. Ended up having to build a whole new PC just to upgrade my video card.
