So, we have 51 million $ (estimated value).

Now let's do the subtraction!

- salaries
  - design
  - programming
  - executives
- physical production
- shipping
- server hosts commissions ( 30 - 95 % of lease income?)
- stock dividends
- etc.

Punchline being: It might have costed EA/Dice more than 40million$ (just a "guestimate" to match the one in the original thread starter)  just to get the game ready for the shelves at our local Quik-E-Mart. Now.. at that point the company/companies have no turnover for this new product, yet the amount of invested capital is massive. As return for taking the risk, and succeeding in producing one of the best fps multiplayer games ever, I'd say that a decent profit margin is a well deserved compensation. The primary idea of having and upholding any company is to profit from it. And with the help of this product, e.g. Dice has had a profit margin of 27% for 2005. All I can say is: "Well done!"

This has nothing to do with 1.3 or any other patch that everyone (including me) whines about infinitely. I'm sure they're "working around the cock" to get 1.31(or something) out there. The game in it self is great, we all know this. So IMHO it is totally justified that EA and especially Dice get a decent return for it.

I say yes for these reasons:

1) Everything you just said.

2) Anyone ever play any of their baseball games? Fuck me. The MVP series is great, finally took out their shitty baseball series before it. But, MVP does have monumental flaw. Such as, in MVP 2004's lefty bug. I mean, a left handed batter COULD NOT hit a home run in that game. They only hit line drives. The only way to hit a homer with a lefty would be to pull it down the line with the slider for batting power jacked up to 50.

MVP 2005 fixed that, but added other faggot bugs, such as:

1. If you hit the ball down the 3rd base line, no matter what runner you have, and no matter where the 3rd baseman picks up the ball (and no matter how good his throwing/accuracy stats are) he will ALWAYS throw you out. I had fucking Ichiro running on a ball hit like that and I was thrown out.

2. You cannot ever pick the computer off. Occasionally it'll happen, but 98% of the time, they make it back. This wouldn't be a big deal, but there's yet another bug that allows the computer to do some super throw before your runner is set and before the batting mode shows up. So, they basically can cheat and pick you off without a problem.

3. Staying with the pitchers, if you hit a ball up the middle, you're fucked. They will grab it 95% of the time. Again, not a big deal, but when you hit a ball 200mph at his face, IRL he wouldn't catch it.

4. Thinking of trying something new and hitting it down the line? Nope, doesn't work in this game. ALL balls hit down the line go foul. If they're looking like they'll go fair, it won't. Some people say to time your swing better, but in the 1+ years I've had the game, I've never gotten a ball down the line (in the air past either 1st or 3rd base that is).

5. No matter what runner you have, you'll probably get thrown out at 2nd trying to get a double. They did it to keep the triples and such down like they had in 04, but in 05, the computer will get to the ball up against the left centerfield wall BEFORE your runner even hits 1st base. Try doing that with your team, and nope, computer cannot be thrown out at 2nd.

6. Foul balls are always caught!!! Every foul ball you hit will be caught. They never seem to go out of bounds. If it does, they'll still rob you.

7. Computer catches balls that are past them.

8. They will rob home runs 100% of the time if it is close enough.

9. And the biggest fucking one in my opinion, is that the 1st baseman NEVER misses a bad throw. He'll pick it, which is fine, but will also stretch out and make ALL catches!!! If you do it though, you're pulled off the bag. The computer is invincible unless you fuck with the sliders.

Thankfully, I'm good at the game and never loose. But still, that many mother fucking bugs in a game is ridiculous. EA needs to get their shit together and learn how to make games, fucking faggots.

Oh, and yeah, BF2 is buggy, but fucking fun as shit. I'm having withdrawl I haven't gotten to play it in three days.

Look at Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 1.  With over 20,000 servers, and almost 10 years of being around combined, they have made more than BF2.  Also,  take games such as everquest and wow.  WoW, I think they boast something like 6,000,000 players, not to mention each one pays 13 dollars a month.  Just for one month of playtime, thats $78,000,000.  Now, most of these players have played a year.  Say $13x6mil=78mil.  Now, 78milx12months = $936,000,000.  Thats just for one year, and wow has been around longer than that.  That is just an estimate also,  they could have more or less players, but either way, it is definatly going to gross more than BF2 in all situations. Oh yeah, and I forgot about the initial cost of buying the game.  $50 bucks.  6milx50 is like $300,000,000.  Now, 300mil+936mil = $1,236,000,000.  Woah.

Everquest, which has been around about 3x as long as wow, still makes tons of money.  I don't even know those stats, but I can gaurntee it makes BF2's 128million seem like pocket change.

These do require maintence with servers however, which BF2 usually doesnt have to worry about, well at least not in as high quantities as these companies.  Anyway,  just some quick number crunching.

People are missing the point with these figures.
Like some have said, it's only a gross total income, in reality less than a third would end up as profit. It's not even like there's one person getting all that money.
It's a big company, they have a lot of staff worldwide. And I'm willing to bet there's very few individuals in there with an income of over a million.
The majority of the company will be ordinary people, working 9 to 5 in an office. Not to mention that they aren't just a development company, they also publish. So there'll be lots of staff who don't even go anywhere near programming.
I don't think there's a need to mention the millions it costs in marketing, production, legalities etc.
