Okay, I did a search using "shot over" and scanned all the subject lines (reading the text was 145 pages of hits).  If this has been discussed, it wasn't named appropriately....

With that disclaimer....one thing I still don't understand about the commander's arty is what "Shot over" means.  When I execute a strike it will say "Artillery firing" in which case I always see the arty come down, and sometimes it will say "Shot over"  Usually I'm too busy to actually watch it in all cases, and I *think* sometimes it does not come down in that case.  Or, does it never come down when it says, "Shot over?"

If anyone could explain that to me I'd appreciate it.  Thanks!

It's just a term the military uses, be it slang or not, I do not know. My assumption was that it comes from the fact that usually artillery fires over friendlies and softens targets before an invasion/attack/maneuver. Hence, "shot over" is a short warning for the ground troops to not worry, it's friendly.

It always comes down, i've never seen it not. The commander also can issue a arty your area warning to squads at anythime however. I imagine its short for shot overhead, meaning watch your ass friendly arty is falling.

Cool, thanks guys.  It used to bother me that it said that, but I also used to not know the 15 second delay.  Thanks for the info!

Ok... being an infantryman, and having done a call for fire (Thats when you call for Arty/Air strikes/MLRS)
Once you give the FDC (Fire Direction Control) they give you a mission number, you write the mission number down,  The FDC will Call "Shot Over" meaning the cannon cockers have fired they're first round or if you called in an Immidiate suppression mission they will let you know the first round is in the air.  When they call "Shot Over" you respond with "Shot Out" that lets the FDC know you acknowledge first round is in the air.  Then after a short amount of time (again depending on the mission type/round being used distance to target and what not) the FDC will call "Splash Over" letting you know to keep an eye out for the effect on target. (IE the round will impact, make sure you're ready to adjust fire if needed) Once the first impact happens you call "Splash Out" and make any adjustments to fire via Polar,Grid adjustments. (unless you did an imediate suppression mision in which case you had better be on the money with the first mission or you're not gonna hit shit or get minimal effects.  Once the round / rounds have been walked to where you need them you call in a "Fire For Effect" letting the FDC know your rounds are on target and to unleash high Angle Hell on the poor SOBs.  Once the Final shot is finished the FDC will call in a "Rounds Complete Over", you respond with "Rounds Complete Out", you then do a BDA (Battle damage assesment) you go like this...
"Thunder FDC, this is Blackhawk 1-2 Victor, End of Mission, 1 T-72 and 3 dismounts destroyed."
That way those cannon cockers that are up to 23 miles away can account for the rounds they expended and get a kill count going. That is an important step cause these guys are busting they're asses to get some effects on target and kill the enemy before they kill you.  They like to know if they hit anything.

Naw man it means the first round is in the air.
Now on an Adjust Fire... is "Walk it in" using the Bracketing method (IE add/Drop 400,200,100,50 Fire for effect) Left or right adjustments are just as easy if you know you're OT factor and get a proper reticle reading.... and you never have to call in an adjustment of 3 or less since arty is indirect and will demolish anything that close

No way brother its "Shot Over","Shot Out",Splash Over" and "Splash Out" If Wiki says there is a pause inbetween the "Shot" and the "Over", Wiki is wrong.  As stated Earlier "Shot Over" lets the observer know first round is in the air.

No Problem Its a bad habbit I have of correcting people. I'm trying to learn to be tactfull in doing it so people dont get upset by my corrections...with Joe Snuffy the Line Dawg...I can just hurl 4 letter expletives at him and slap him on the back of the KPot and watch him correc tthe mistake.
