I've looked through all the topics on this in the forums and I've followed everything they've said to do to fix this. I've also looked through googled pages and whatnot, but still no luck. 15 seconds into the game and it just crashes. Any help on this would be appriciated.
We're all in the same boat as you. I have been trying different configs and such. I too am having no luck. I have contacted both PB and EA about this problem. Because of the weekend, I probably won't get a response until Monday at the earliest.
This is pissing me off too because I am addicted to this game and want to play badly.....

So the game starts but after few secs crashes to desktop...
1st and very common tip :
1. REMOVE ALL components from game (first uninstall then look from registry..)
2. Install the game and the updates (all updates...)
3. Now game works like a charm...
There MIGHT be one other problem too. I could almost bet this one.
It looks like PB or the game engine would cause the crash but no.
It is done, in fact, by operating system (taking error dumps often help ).
This occures if you fiddle your WINDOWS services by using those numerous "Tips and tricks.." found from Internet...none are for you ! They are, as it says, tips and tricks. They work ONLY (well usually..) on PC that the article writer uses.
If you have WINDOWS XP PRO and you have LESS than about 16 processes running when you join server, then you are missing some of core components and will for sure be kicked (IF you get that far..).
Those components allow PB automatically connect to PB-server.
If you have some services "off"-state and PB tries to connect but fails, PB will kick you for sure..no need to ask why
How to fix :
Start adding back those services you have disabled (or marked "manual" ). Some of them really NEEDS to be started automatically
That is only one possible fault generator/fix...hard to say more with so little info.
P.S. I have now 20 processes running. Those include Logitech G5 drivers (3).
So for XP it leaves 17 processes. With these I can play, download and do all what I need.
I could snap one more "off" but then I would have to start the process manually EVERY time I try to install something (..or XP/installshield would crash..).
I have used this "config" over a year with no problems. Connection type 8/512 ADSL (router on my table..).
BUT !
...I had EXACTLY similar "join-->kick fast"-problem you both described when I tested some services (shutting/starting them manually..)
Don't know if that helped or not..
OH...that's only if using Win XP PRO. If you use LINUX or XP Home...dunno..

Yeah, I have XP Home, so thanks for the XP Pro solution. I'll remember it when I go to play BF2 at the office, haha.
I've gone so far as to resotre my system to a point when BF2 worked. (IE 2 days ago) Still did nothing. Blergh.
Oh boy, on top of that I now can't even get into the game because of this error:
"Shaders/StaticMesh.fx not found!!! _DO_ check your working directory, _AND_ sync your shaders before calling upon your local rendering programmer/GP. (really!)"
What...the...fuck. I need the Geek Squad to come. :-P

Well, as a direction, these services are almost all I need for playing :
DHCP-client (svchost)
DNS-client (svchost)
RPC (svchost) -> hmm..do not try but not always needed.
Plug'n'Play (services.exe)
WMI (svchost)
Windows firewall (svchost) -> touch this one and many things will be messed. DO NOT DISABLE ! (after XP SP2..)
Windows Audio (svchost)
+ some more
After SP2 there is no need to tweak some things in XP. One and most important is firewall...

Yeah...StaticMesh.fx should be at 2 places :
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\bf2editor\Shaders"
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Shaders_client.zip"
There are totally 103 those ".fx"-files on the folder.
Hmm...what have you be doing with your BF2
Those mesh-files have data about what you see in the game...

I'm such a computer noob. I fixed that problem and am now back to the regular crash-n-burn problem. Uggh. Is punkbusting a few hackers really worth this?BudRell wrote:

I had the same problem of the game crashing at about 30 seconds into the round, i manage to fix this problem by uninstalling windows service pack 2.
When punkbuster updated, it and service pack 2 seem to have problems with each other.
My symtons were the game and computer freezing and i had to restart the PC.
Once Windows service pack 2 was remove everything seems to work fine.
I got this idea by googling the problem and this was one of the ideas.
And before removed Service pack 2 i played in single player and none PB servers and the game was fine, but as soon as i played on a PB server the game freezed.
Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

Yeah I also played a non-PB server game a few times and I had no problem. I just recently played 3 rounds on a PB server and also had no problem with that server. I haven't tried other servers yet. But what I did so far was update my motherboard with it's current drivers. I haven't tried anything else as of yet....paranoid101 wrote:

Hi guys just a quick update, if you do remove windows service pack2, you will need to reinstall your graphic card drivers, dirext x9c and maybe your motherboard drivers.
Like i said the game might start working again on its own when PB finishs updating, but i think you might keep having the problems, because of Windows service pack 2, so what i'm saying is remove it if you wish, it did work for me, so its up to you.
I myself spent two days solid trying to solve this problem by running loads of virus and spyware programs and unistalling the game over and over again. Then one of my clan members said it could be the service pack and guess what as soon as it was removed, the game start working. It must be some sort of confiction between PB and the service pack.
Just trying to help because i know it can be a right pain when the games not working.
