Dragon Valley the other day, playing as USMC, and the guy didn't seem too bad at first. He was alright at giving support when you asked for it and he gave generally decent orders.

Then later in the game, a whole group of us were assaulting the Refinery flag, Squad 3 (mine) and Squad 1, and he says over radio "Sqaud 3 continue attacking, Squad 1 fall back to defend Village flag". Squad 1 ignored this and continued assaulting with us, and the commander blamed *MY* squad, including using the "Next time try following orders!" command. I was pretty frustrated by that because we'd been pushing hard to try to achieve his objective, despite us being on foot and the Refinery being covered in enemy armor.

So then he asks my squad to defend a particular flag (the one below the Power Station, on the river.. don't remember the name) and I figured I would give him a second chance, so I spawned there and virtually the second I've spawned he changes the order to defending the flag closest to the USMC uncap! At the same time, my flag is being attacked anyway, so my squad defends it and holds it successfully, and then he sends the "Next time try following orders!" thing AGAIN. Meanwhile he is constantly bitching about all of the squads and giving us a hard time for not following his orders and losing back flags while taking forward flags.

We won the round by about 100 tickets.

He was the lowest rank player on our team. The only reason he even GOT commander is because no one else felt like it that round.

Yeah, I'm sure there's already a thread on this sort of thing.

I was playing today and there was a commander AFK and we had 1 base left on Mashtuur and there was no munity button we ended up losing all bases and i was last alive and i was a sniper and i was killed by a helo. I dont like commanders who are low rank and drive around in armor helo or jets unless its worth while to the team i can see a commander taking enemy tank at a base. But not a commander taking F-35 on wake island. I think there should be some kind of commander guide in the game before you can be commander online cause some ppl know how to play good and some play like its infantry and never use the commander assests. +1 for u

I really don't like commanders who charge around the map, especially when they use commander assets to make themselves a supersoldier instead of to help the whole team. When I command I tend to pick a covered location near a flag, and I only step out of it if the flag that I'm on is being attacked, in which case I'll use anything nearby to defend it, and then go back to commanding full time.

he was probably using the "ctrl-A" route, selecting all squads, and applying orders to all squads...
dont take it personally... just tune out if he is a dick.

I guess it just bugs me because when I'm squad leader I do try very hard to integrate my squad's local combat with the overall game

and thats to be commended, but tbh, i find that most commanders only drop uav, and occasionally supplies.  most never tell u where to go, or include u in the overall gameplan.  if u have half a brain, u can pre-empt the enemies intentions, thereby negating the need to interact with commander, but if the commander role is filled by someone who is interested in commanding, then thats a plus.  i myself command a lot (3 hours short of 200  atm), and i like to get the squads involved, and i find that it takes half a game for the team to work out that there is actually someone playing commander who WANTS to play commander, not just get the x2 multiple on score.  Fuck me, if im on a team where the commander is in a plane or chopper, or even a fucking tank, i either change teams or server. nothing worse.

a good commander CAN SURELY win a game for a team, even an inexperienced team, as long as there is commander:squad interaction.

Oh absolutely, I definitely prefer commanders who actually interact, it lifts the game quality 100%. When I command (which isn't that often .. only 10 hours or so) I try to keep people in the loop and give good directions. In fact this guy is about the first commander who spoke a lot who really irritated me, and it was solely because he was criticising us excessively even though we were winning the game anyway.

My best experience of commanding was a guy who gave a running commentary, like "Ok, I'm doing the scanner... squad 2 you have a group of infantry coming in... squad 1 the area is clear.. most enemies are around x flag... dropping arty there... supplies ready in 10 seconds" throughout the entire game, under him we didn't lose a round. It was like a warm blanket or a guardian angel.

i think EVERYONE should be able to hear the commander not just squad leaders
it would be nice to know what they are saying if they are using voip all the time

What makes a good commander to you? I despise commanders who just use their do-dads from under a hanger and then get x2 points for doing nothing except artillery kills. I believe he should be proactive and should move in with those troops to see the real situation. You have to earn your right to command and give orders and commander bonus. Real good commanding takes a lot of multitasking...

If i go into combat as a commander it is because im waiting for all of the command functions to recharge. I keep on forgetting about the mic in game so i type messages to squads and players warning them about things. It has helped them alot. What i hate the most is when squads just ignore or say negative to orders even if their commands are outdated (attack on a captured point)

While there are different strategies for being an effective commander, I must disagree with you to some degree.

If playing on a 16 player map, you are perfectly correct and a commander plays a much more active role, engaging in combat as well as deploying the commander assets.

On a larger map, it is a different story. As you say, it involves a "lot of multitasking" to do things effectively. To have maximum awareness of what is developing on the map, the scanner must run essentially all the time and the commander conveys that information to the troops as well as using it as a guide to deciding the most useful location for the deployment of the UAV, supplies, or artillery. It  is useful to have the commander verbally communicating with SLs about what is happening as well - zooming in on the map as they take an objective, giving them running commentary on where the enemy is moving, and so on. Not many of us who try to command effectively can do this well if we are not spending the bulk of our time in the commander screen.

On Warlord, my fav. map, you have to move a lot as Insurgent, all your points can be capped, so the moment you don't pay attention, your spawnpoint may be gone, along with the x2
The key to commanding is balancing combat and assets, and communicating with the team, but not too much...

I completely agree.

On a 16 player map I think a commander is unnecessary. The best mix there is two squads of four.

From 32 and upwards, a good commander is the difference between winning and losing. Of course you need at least one good squad too but good commanders and good squads attract eachother.

I'm speaking as someone with only 10 hours of commanding, yes. My experience of what makes a commander good is from the other end, with my 200+ of squad leader.

oh, and a sarcastic pat on the head for the -1 and "this is why you suck at commanding", since my own skill as commander doesnt enter into anything I'm saying. For the record, I won the majority of rounds I commanded in and I attribute those wins to having good squads who were willing to work with me. I think I'm alright, but I don't use voip enough.

Not trying to force my own opinion on everyone of course, but I've found that a good commander is one who actually commands.

If I ever get my sound card fixed I am going to start commanding again.  It sucks without a mic.  I use to love commanding when I could tell the squad leaders where they needed to focus, always makes the round go smoother.  If I was a defending commander (MEC on Karkand or Insurgents on Warlord) I would pick one flag that can be easily defended and control that one while my squad leaders worked the rest of the map.  If I needed help I could call in the Cav.  I can almost always defend the Suburbs without having to divert a squad that is needed at the hotel or the Factory.  Yea, I know that the defend and kill points don't help me but if I can keep my Squads in the real fight then we are more likely to win.

I hate servers with no mutiny votes allowed. I mean ya it gets annoying when some retard just keeps voting mutiny for no reason but it sucks even worse when you have a commander no one likes or is afk but you can't do anything about it.

On my server we use the rule "Commanders not do fight - They command only"

It makes them do their job properly....
