Computer advice!

anyways.. looking at a new comp when i can and found a sony that is in my range.

but my question is that it lists a pentium 4 540j 3.4ghz as its processor, but I for the life of me cannot find the 540j listed anywhere (even intels site) at over 3.2ghz.

If anyone has the answer plz share!! also, if anyon can give me a link to a comparable system to around $1000 plz share also.

and if this is the wrong forum for this (wasn't sure which would be the proper one), just shoot me down :-P

Word of advice from past experiences. DONT GET WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER. And umm thats about it. Its good though

I have windows XP professional i would install on the computer, along with all office. The card/processor speed and memory are the main draws i see on the system.

If you can go $1,000 why not buy the parts and build it yourself. You're always better off that way . . .

Only if you know what your doing or can get good advice. You have to do your research, or have someone who's advice you'd trust do the research (someone that knows a thing or two about putting computers together would be good)...

IAH, It's not really that difficult to do a custom build. It's much easier than people think . . . the standard build that is.

'IAH'? That's one I've not seen before.

Anyhoo, yes, you're right, the actuall putting together of a system from it's component parts is actually very easy . And, if you take the right precautions - e.g. use a grounded anti-static wrist-strap, don't bend or force things - these things are designed to fit together! - it's actually quite hard to really screw things up...

The point I was making is you need to know what combination of component parts to buy - whether you go for AMD or intel determines what group of motherboards you should be looking at - that then determines what type of memory you require, what flavour video card, HDD and DVD/CD configurations and so on...

Again, that's not really all that difficult - if you know what you're looking for - as I said before, you need to do your research.

www.tomshardware.com is a good place to start... and I'm sure others could suggest other sites if you find that too technical...

well I think there is a good and bad from custom builds.

goods-

get quality parts for way less
you learn a lot from building one

bads-
-you have to purchase all the software(which is not cheap), and sony has some good software they add to their pc's
-one little mistake and youll be scraching your head all day

looked at the sony specs, and youre better off with buying it! and about the processor, its pretty damn good, sometimes big makers like sony get stuff that you cant buy, but im shure if you look harder youll be able to find that 3.4ghz 540j. of course amd is better for gaming, but intel is not that behind in gaming, but ahead for everyother tasks(of course depending on the processor)

building is so easy, thgere are so many tech fourms to answer your questions you'll be done in NO time. i built my first comp when iw as 12. surprisiingly it worked. so.... my advice, like everyone else's is build it

you can get SWEET STUFF building it. nad about the software, there are alternatives to microsoft word and stuff like open office (www.openoffice.org) and well there is no alternative for windows, but whatever... anyway dont get a p4 get athlon 64. and like at least 1 gig of ram 2-2-2-5 timings, and like an x850 XT (surprisingly therye only $350 PCI-Express) anyway.... you probably dont understand me. whatever

There's a shop here called IT Fever, great place, has all the latest hardware. It's got this great deal (and the only thing they actually do).

They give you a form, you check the parts you want. hmm.. ooh fata1ity.. i want one of those... *tick* etc.
you need to have at least a mobo, processor, 1 HDD, and a vid card for the deal. Each item has normal store price on it (if you don't believe them, go next door or somewhere in the building and compare prices), and then add any other peripherals and extra components, then hand in your form.

They'll cut off 200-300 dollars off the price, then give you 2 hours. In those two hours you can go around the whole damn building buying games and software etc things to test on your new comp, then go back and it's put together, XP installed/configured, just take home and you're done.

Yeah, when i outfitted my new RAM, i accidentally unplugged thsoe two wires that light up your "On" light and your HDD Access light. And i dn't know where they go. Mobo manual doesn't help at all.
