Any "Rescue Me" fans here? That show is the best! I love how it has such a dark sense of humor. Funny how all the characters have such fucked up lives and the only time they can function normally is when they're running through burning building and saving people and stuff. Denis Leary is awsome! I think what sets it apart from other firefighter/ cop/ paramedic shows is the actors. They are all very good and their reactions and emotions dont seem fake and hollywood-like as they do in other shows *cough* "Saved" *cough*

I have both Rescue Me DVDs because I don't have cable. While it seems authentic, they actually take a large number of liberties with how real FDNY firefighters live and work. They DON"T get laid as often as they claim, that part is made up for the series. In fact, the show has become very dull because they are distracting from the real post-9/11 emotions with all the sex. The Second season DVD has a discussion between Diane Parr and some real FDNY firefighters about the realism in the show.
That said, I like the show. Leary is funny as hell even when he's not trying to be. The supporting cast is great, particularly the chief Jack McGee. However, where the hell does Tommy get all of his cash. He always seems to have a wad of hundreds at all times - at the same time he tells his nephew (Jimmy's son) that they don't make a lot for the risks they take. Oh well, it's just TV.

I used to live in the same building with a local firefighter. He said the local guys just laughed at Rescue Me as well as Ladder 49, Backdraft and the old TV show "Emergency!" for being ridiculous. But he admitted that at least they tried.
The best video he ever saw was "9/11" by the two French documentary makers. Absolutely amazing how they managed to get into the towers and cover the whole thing. A real tribute to the FDNY and to firefighters everywhere. We still think that technology has made things better for us, but firefighting is still an extremely dangerous job. I was in NYC in June and had the pleasure to see the new FDNY memorial on the side of Ladder 10, directly across the street from Ground Zero. They lost 6 guys that day.
Whenever these Guantanamo prisoners complains about conditions there, I say hand them over to the FDNY, the NYPD and the PAPD. After that, Gitmo will seem like Club Med.
