are you overclocking?  I had to back my settings down for the OC because of BF2 issues similar to yours.  Does lowering the settings help at all?  Maybe turning EAX off (messes with my crapo sound if enabled) would help.

Kaosdad still asked the good question.  If it doesn't do it at all with singleplayer, you know you've got a network issue.  If this is the case, temporarily disable your firewall and see if that helps.  I only suggest this b/c I've seen  software firewalls get upset with heavy packet traffic.  I haven't seen games cause it though...just ftp traffic on my local network and P2P apps.

That sounds like either your CPU or your GPU is overheating. More Fans, or some Silver Therma Grease between the CPU and Heatsink might solve your problem.

Edit: try playing BF2 with the side of your computer opened up. I know just now with the heatwave my computer lags a bit at times, so i took the side of the computer off for extra ventilation.

That's what I was thinking it might be too.

Definitely turn off spyware- and virus-protection software before playing, in fact turn off anything that doesn't need to be running to maximise the available resources. With some virus software it doesn't appear to make any noticeable difference (AVG for example) but Norton AV is a bitch for hogging memory. Do you have Norton Internet Security as well?

Turn off your Anti-Virus.  Running Norton in the background is gonna cause lag.  Especially since Norton and Macaffee are really use alot of resources it will benefit you.
