Couldn't find a topic like this, so here goes:

As I was searching through the forum this morning, I came across this in many different posts.

What Is this?

Is anyone else experiencing this when they view pages on the forum? I usually see 5 or 6 different number combinations in a day, I was just wondering whats going on here. Anybody know?

Oh, and I didn't type it in myself.

It's the last PID that you searched for

EDIT, ahh maybe not, now it randomly says '550997' (which isn't a real PID)

I'v worked out what it is...

The number that appears it the Id number for the thread that you are looking at...

but i dont know why it appears

I think it's not the ID of the thread, but rather that of your post (or maybe the last post in this thread), as the numbers are way too high to be thread-IDs.

I clicked quote on your post and the address bar says

so, the thread ID seems to be 34305, while the ID of your post seems to be 551021.

I still can't exactly tell what post ID goes into the text field, let alone why, but that seems to be what's going on.

Edit: After submitting this post, the ID of my post got assigned to the text field. I still don't know why, just thought you might want to know.

If it were IDs of any kind would they not go up incrementally? from what i see theyre randomly bouncing up and down all over the place

Not necessarily. You could be looking at a certain thread with some post (first/last ?) has the ID 50000. After that you might be reading a thread that has been made earlier, so the id might be 49000. The next thread might be a newer one again, so the ID is higher again, and so on.

So, it's easily possible for those IDs to bounce up and down, as it depends on the order in which you view the threads.
