Ok, lastnight before I went to bed I downloaded an installed the lastest windows update for Windows XP.  Now, this morning when I wake up to play BF2, I tried joining 3 separate servers on 3 separate tries.  All 3 times I CTD after everything was done loading.

Can there be a correlation between the 2?  Anyone else having this happen to them?

I think there's a correlation , that's why I never used windows update on my PC!
Software have some incompatibility between them , if it works don' touch anything!
did you change something in your firewall ??

Quick question:  do you have an AMD processor?

(Why do I ask?  Because over the last week, there's been a lot of quirky behavior with some machines and not others following a windows update ... my machine updated with no problems, but I have an Intel P4 processor).
