I've NEVER been kicked for high ping (except when my AV kicks in) before.... But ever since I upgraded from ADSL to ADSL2+ (using a zyxel router)  I keep getting kicked from most of my favorite servers. My average ping has increased from 30-40 to around 120-130. Sometimes it's worse sometimes it's better. But everytime I get a ping spike I get kicked for high ping !

Does seeing as how I'm playing on the same servers as before, and the new connection is supposed to be faster, I believe I only have two place to put blame: The new ISP, or the new Router.

Now, when I load the serverlist it shows monster high ping, when I click a server, the ping drops to "normal" levels, but if I click the same server again, I spike like MAD.... So what could be causing this ? Package size too big ? Misconfiguration in teh router ? Bad ISP ? Any and all ideas are most welcome.

I think this should probably go into tech.

This could well be your new ISP (contention ratio maybe) but is your router wireless by any chance?

I don't know but I have been getting higher pings lately too. How recently did you upgrade? I started having lag issues about 2-3 weeks ago.

Mine started exactly when I change to a new provider... And I've found (I think) the cause of the mishap....
For some reason or other, when I connect to a server in NORWAY (I'n located in Denmark about 300 miles from this server), the package gets routed VIA NEW YORK and HOUSTON... Yep... Two hops over the atlantic... So I'm TOTALLY at the mercy of the whimsical transatlantic lines.

So now the question becomes: What can I as a private person do about this ?
The network provider is "cogent" according to ICANN. Can I circumvent their routing ? Or should I try to contact them, or my provider ?

Okay, well that sucks. Server's in Scandinavia, you're in Scandinavia and the packets have to go to North America??? Ugh.

You could try, but I wouldn't hold my breath about them being able to help. Still, worth a shot!
