Hey,

Need some clearification on the subject of enlisted rank vs officer ranks in the us military, plz.  (Also, plz excuse my ignorance on this subject).  I graduated college a few years back and at that time heard that all college graduates, when entering the army/navy/marines, will automatically be given an officer rank (2nd Lieutenant I presume).  Is this true?  or is there an "officers school" that each college graduate needs to complete before that officer rank will be given.  If it's true, I'm not sure how my degree in finance would be of great benefit   ;-P

Next...are officer ranks (ie, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, etc) the same in the army and in the Marines?  or do ranks differ?  ANyone know of any good sites that list from bottom to top, every rank in the military?

Lastly, do all ranks below a higher rank need to salute the higher rank.  For example, do all Privates need to salute PFC's?  Do all PFC's need to salute Lance Corporals, etc all the way up the line?

Thanks for your help.  I find all this quite interesting (only wish I knew more).,

Teebs

A) officer with degree:  you -can- be an officer if you have a degree.  They don't -make- you be an officer.  I know seargents in the canadian army who have law degrees :p
B) As I recall they are
C) No.  You salute a commission.  ... so you salute officers only.  officers salute higher ranking officers.

Im a Staff Sergeant in the USAF.  If you want to join the military go talk to your local recruiter and he/she will put you in touch with commissioning opportunities.  You must attend OTS (Officer Training School) or equivelent (Academy, ROTC, Citadel).  Upon completion you will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant (Army, Marines, Airforce) or an Ensign (Navy).   Army, Marines and the Airforce have the exact same officer rank structure with the airforce exception of no warrant officers.  Every service enlisted ranks differ.

Beeng is right with the salute thing, and officers of the same rank may salute each other especially if one knows they are subordinate.  Im working towards my CE degree and hopefully be commissioned by 2009.
