Here is the deal, i have been playing this game quite happily for the last month or so with little problems with 1.3, Now today it no longer wants to start up at all.

when i load the game, the splash screen comes up and the screen goes black, after that it CTDs without an error. I cant get into the game at all, both sf and regular.

What i have done now is, update video drivers, reinstall the game and SF (patched to 1.12). Ran a virus scan, and cleaned the registry out after the uninstall.

Yet i have the same problem. I have no clue why it started doing this and ive tried the above with no success. it would be nice if any of you could help me a bit and try and solve it.

Thanks,

I am having a similar issue.  I can get the splash screen.  Then it goes through the startup videos and all that.  I am capable of logging into my account and see servers, however, when it comes time to connect to a server it stays how it is for a moment or two then seems like it minimizes to desktops but it just closes.  Any ideas? anyone.

Three thoughts:

(1)  Microsoft came out with a new patch within the last two days .... conflict?  Using system restore, you can roll back to your system configuration prior to the installation of "Software Distribution Service 2.0"
(2)  Video card is malfunctioning (hardware) ... see if the crash happens with a different card?
(3)  Your sound is the problem (sound seems to cause as many issues as video) ... disable sound, or switch to an alternate sound source, or update your sound drivers.

Edit:  fourth thought ... (4)  Your configuration files have been screwed up (these are your profile settings).  When you uninstall BF2, these files are left intact, and when you reinstall they will still be present.  Try deleting these files after your uninstall so that you have a completely clean new install.  The downside to this is that you willl lose all the custom configurations/settings you have established.

I had that same problem. all the sudden it wont work with 2 monitors. I played on my plasma tv with my moniter still hooked up. now I have to have seperate desktops setup with only one moniter on at a time. just started doing it one day. its the only game it does it on.

nope, just ran the full, and still.

Also no other game seems to work, Hl2 for example gives an engine error. I dont know what could have caused this. And to reinstall windows would be a huge pain

Really?  Then this doesn't sound like a BF2 problem ... I would suspect either a hardware failure (overclocking video???) or perhaps DirectX has been corrupted.

To reinstall Directx, find your "dxsetup" on your Directx installation CD (came with your video card ... might be able to download off internet) ... run this and then select the reinstall option.  MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT INSTALLING A LOWER VERSION OF DIRECTX (if you have 9.0c, do not attempt this with a 9.0a dxsetup).

As posted I had a similar issue.  To fix it I installed a backup harddrive.  Uninstalled the game from my C and then reinstalled it onto my games drive G.  After that I reinstalled directx.  When you've done that run "dxdiag" and check to see if there are any files that have a warning symbol beside them.  My file was "d3dx9_24.dll" wasn't right or something so I went to, www.threelights.com and found the right download.. extracted to my system 32 folder and ran the dxsetup.  Try it out and I hope it works.

It's a very common problem, probably related to video card error or installed file corruption. Not sure how to fix it, but try maybe installing bf2 to a different location on your C drive, rather than buying a new one. \

Also consider a Disk Defragmentation.
