The "gay" insult/label refers to flambouyancy. Think Richard Simmons, Jim J Bullock and Graham Norton (the last one whom frequently uses the word to describe things which are "flamingly flambouyant". I'm not old enough to remember much about him, but I don't think Rock Hudson was flambouyant. He was, however, gay. On the other hand, Liberachi was both flambouyant and gay in both senses of the word. Rock Hudson would have called Liberachi "gay".
