You will not be able to play regular Battlefield 2 with other people who do not have the expansion. To do this, you must upgrade your newly bought expansion with the newly released 1.12 Patch on EA's web site.

BARE IN MIND THE FOLLOWING:

Even if people and server admins do not buy the expansion, THEY TOO ARE REQUIRED to install the 1.12 patch.

This basically means everything works togather, whether or not people have the expansion.

If you go ahead and install 1.12 right now, you still wont be able to play with current servers online at the time of this writing because it'll take hours/a day for people to start upgrading to the new patch which will allow their normal servers and games to be compatible with this expansion.

So in a short answer, a patch was released to allow everyones game to work togather. Go download it and wait.
