One of my clan-mates has had stability problems and resolved by a full uninstall, full re-install, patch applied to the new install.

I'm not sure I'm willing yet to go to that level. What I notice is that I have to re-boot after I exit BF2 if I want to play the game again. BF2.exe hangs on launch after the first exit.

Anyone else seeing anything similar?

I havn't seen that error.
You might want to check the EA-UK forums or totalbf2 forums; their user base is much larger than here, and therefor you're more likely to find an answer.

I have that problem with the 1.03 patch, and with the trouble I had trying to install it, I am hesitant on trying on install this patch as well.  EA support told me to do what your clan-mate did, and when that didnt work they told me to re-install my OS. 
Sounded like a load of crap to me so I didnt do it.
Lately I have been able to run it a second time without the freeze, but on the second load the memory usage increases dramatically after time, such as on initial startup it uses ~100mb of RAM, after about 2-3 hours, it uses ~500mb.
I have no idea whats goin on.  =/
