OK.. here's the prob.. I'm able to connect to the Internet, yet when I try to surf the Internet or play BF2, nuthin comes up. For some odd reason I'm able to browse through BF2s (maybe its the cache?).. fortunately I'm able to post on here without any problems. Even when I try Google or Yahoo - all it does is try to connect for 30 seconds, then it tells me the site is not available. So what's going on? I'm sure it's not my firewall (I already turned it off to see if it was the prob).. so I'm thinkin it's my ISP? Any suggestions?

EDIT: I managed to get into a Stateside connection test website. From a NYC server they said my download speed was normal. (~450 kbps down, 200 up)

either you have some nasty virus/malware/bug/whatever (i.e. reinstall win) or your ISP fucked up bad (ask them)
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

ping www.usatoday.com and see if you get a steady ping or not. If it fluxuates, it's either malware or your ISp.

If you have Xp with SP2 try reseting the winsock catalog and the TCP/IP Stack

In a prompt type "netsh int ip reset" this for TCP/IP reset
Then type "netsh winsock reset"

The Winsock prompts didn't change anything..

It took a while to load USA Today's website.. definitely not at a normal DSL speed.. even worse than 56k.

Its very odd... some sites load (BF2s.com, USA Today) and some sites don't (Google, Yahoo, Airliners.net).

No, I mean go into a comand prompt (start-->run-->cmd   >enter<) then type ping www.usatoday.com

get

Spy-bot S&D

Windows Defender

Ad-Aware

Run scans, let us know if that fixes it.

Do you have Anti-Virus?

I can manage to get to the websites of all of the anti-spyware programs.. but I'm unable to download them - they all time out.

I haven't had an anti-virus since my nightmare with Norton Anti-virus. That damn thing did more harm than good to my computer.. Since then I've relied on Windows Firewall for security.

I'm going to see if its an ISP or just my comp.. I'm gonna get my dad's computer and hook up to the line and see how it goes.

Try downloading the install files to your dad's computer and burn them to disk so you can install them on your computer. Sounds like you may have a virus. AVG is free if you want to try that.

Fortunately my dad's computer has the same problem... so that rules out any virus. The odd thing is that I was able to go to websites I couldn't get to on this comp.. then I was unable to load up BF2S.com.. it's weird how inconsistent the problem is...

This is funny considering I just got a phone survey from my ISP just the other day... if this had happened before they would've got a worse rating from me... hmm.. seems like its time to change providers. That won't happen though.. since I'm movin to the States for college in a few months. The phone service in the UK is really appalling... in Germany it was perfect.. no probs whatsoever. In the UK its nuthin but trouble.

Try doing a trace route in a comand prompt.

type       tracert www.bf2s.com

See if you can tell where the hold up is.

Well I was gonna just post a screenshot of what the tracert found.. but Photobucket isn't loading up.. surprise surprise..

I'm assuming I'm looking for a high ping.. and in hop two here's what it shows:

187ms 296ms 31ms cmbg-t2core-a-ge-wan74.inet.ntl.com [80.1.201.53]

Another high ping shows up at hop 6:

171 ms  *  171ms so-3-0-0.mp1.sanfrancisco1.level13.net [209.247.8.89]

and at hop 9:

* 171ms * border-core1-ge3-0.sfo2.servepath.net [209.213.192.123]

There was more but the program finished before I could type it all out.

I just ran it again and at hop 2 it gives me the same IP but with a much lower ping. (15 15 15)

It's interestin'... my ISP is labeled as Tesco Broadband.. yet it seems that it uses NTL's system. That explains why Myspace wasn't working for me as well as everyone in the UK who was using NTL.

Thanks for the help anyways... at least I didn't get a virus.
