Searched and checked everything.

REWARD: $25 PayPal – To who ever helps me fix this, or gives me the most helpful information that will lead me to getting this game running on this computer.

I found several people with the same problem that have never been able to fix it, so if I ever do get to the bottom of this, I will try to help the rest.

To make it clear... my biggest problem is installing the patch, it crashes half way through.

First off... I'll list my specs:

AMD 64 3800+
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Motherboard
1GB Corsair XMS 400Mhz Ram
ATI Sapphire X1600XT

Things I have installed

DirectX 9.0c Junes Version - dled from MS site
.NET Frameworks 1.1
Latest ATI Driver
Updated Latest Asus BIOS 0502

I'll also evaluate the things I've tried.

At first, I was on XP Service 1 and .NET Frameworks 2.0 & older BIOS (0311)

Step 1: Installed BF2 for the first time, launched game, worked fine.

Step 2: Fully & Successfully installed Patch 1.3 FULL downloaded from BF2S site.

Result A: Tried launching game, black screen went on for 2 seconds, and came back to desktop.

Step 4: Uninstalled BF2 and reinstalled it,

Step 5: Tried Installing Patch 1.3 FULL again

Result B: Patch Installation never completed, it closed off on this part of the installation.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v444/X-Vert/BF2Installation.jpg

Result C : Same as Result A

Step 6: Installed XP SP2, uninstalled .NET 2.0, and installed .NET 1.1

Step 7: Repeated Step 4 & 5, result was “Result B”

Then I did some googling and came up with this… http://forums.filefront.com/showpost.ph … ostcount=8

Installed BF2 again, deleted the mods folder, booted into safe mode and installed the patch, it never finished installing.

Step 8: Repeated step 4, downloaded Patch v1.2, successfully installed.

Result D: Same as Result A

Step 9: Downloaded Patch v1.3 Incremental, attempted to install never completed.

Updated BIOS (0511)

Step 10: Repeated Step 4 & 5 – Result B

Step 11: Repeated Step 4 & attempted to install v1.2 FULL again – never completed.

Yes, I checked my bf2.exe file, its named correctly. Yes, I waited after attempting to install the patch and waited after attempting to launch the game, nothing ever came up.

I downloaded 3 different v1.3 FULL patches from: BF2S.com, GamersHell.com, and StrategyInformer.com.

Between all those steps, I installed and uninstalled BF2 about 15 times. I already memorized the CD key.

I also tried running the CCleaner as one user recommended. It cleans the registry, I tried that after uninstalling BF2 but that didn’t help.

Then I came upon this…

“That brings us up to this evening when some of our readers contacted us saying that they and a few others were experiencing random performance issues in real world programs (such as Quake 4 and Battlefield 2) when using their A8R32-MVP. Having read through those issues it was clear that they too had attempted many of the same fixes as us and as they did not have access to the timing fix bios (v 0309) they were left with an unusable board and worse, a waste of money.”

But I think that excludes me as my BIOS were 0311 when I got my hands on the Motherboard, and now the BIOS are updated to 0511.

Things I’m going to try:

Uninstall everything, clean registry, and delete any BF2 related files, boot into safemode and install bf2 along with patch v1.3 FULL.

If that doesn’t work, I’ll format the pc and try again.

If that doesn’t work, sell the MB and get something else.

Try to install all this crap on my other pc (im sure it’ll work)

If you have any helpful information that will lead me to getting this game running on this computer, please post it here, I would REALL appreciate it. Thanks.

try restoring your computer to before you had the problem? I'd probably be alot more helpful if I was over your house, but I might be a bit far away.
Are you installing special forces as well?
Are you installing any other patch versions?
Are you rebooting your computer after deletions & installs?
After you remove it from add /remove programs sometimes ghosts of games remain in regedit & screw up re-installs.
Start, run, regedit,HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, EA games, bf2. Delete that & sometimes it will be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as well in software, ea, bf2.
Now be careful in your registry because you can mess stuff up good in here, only delete the bf2 entries, there should only be 2 at most.
Reboot after that & try a fresh install.
I dont want cash, I just want a game with you if ya ever get it running.
good luck.

I had the same issue as you... the black screen for 2 seconds and then back to desktop thing. What I did was I right clicked on my shortcut, and changed +fullscreen to 0. This allowed me to run BF2 in windowed mode and it ran fine. I then changed my video settings to the resolution and refresh rate I desired and exit the game. I right clicked on the shortcut and changed fullscreen back to 1, the game then ran fine in fullscreen. So maybe this'll work for you?

I'm only installing BF2, for now atleast.
Not installing any other patches other than 1.3. As stated in my original post, I tried 1.2 to 1.3 but that didn't work.
Rebooted after every installation and deletion.
After every deletion, the registry is clean of bf2/ea files.

and thanks, really appreciate your help.

see, thats not really my problem, my biggest problem is installing the patch correctly... it stops half way, but appriciate the help.

try dling it from bf1942files.com
ver.1.3 could be corrupted on this site
it could be that your video card catalist drivers need to be updated cause they may run out of sync with the new graphics setup.
your memory my not be running the same speed as your bus causing instability
a video card overheating problem

a video card overheating problem
downloaded 3 different versions of the patch
video drivers are upto date
doubt it has anything to do with the memory or video card overheating

again.. my problem is installing the patch...

and... the game works fine after installation at the highest graphic settings, and before any patches are installed.

Not sure if this would work for you but it did work for someone else with the same prob.......

Some guy on EA forums wrote:

For some reason BF2 really does not like my DVD drive so in the end I mapped a drive to the Girl friends laptop and installed from there.

I then found that I couldn’t patch, and kept getting the Patch failed error, and after trying pretty much everything, I installed BF2 on the laptop patched it and copied all the game files back across to my PC and thankfully it worked

credit to the idea of copying files from another PC goes to someone else but after looking at so many forums I completely forget who it was, but whoever you are, I thank you....very much indeed
Best of luck.

Edit: If this works, take the $25, buy some good beer and CELEBRATE!

My bro had a similar problem installing patch 1.3, but he used to get an error message half way through installation. In the end I put the patch onto CD for him and he was able to install it then. Do you know someone who has got patch 1.3 and it works for them? if so, you could ask them to put it on CD for you, then you save it on your PC and run it, or you could try installing the patch from some other locations.

I just installed the game on my other computer, it installed fine on XP SP1 and currupt .NET 2.0 (installation didn't finish) and old ATI Drivers.

Game is running smoothly.

Im going to format my new computer now and reattempt the installation.

OH wow dude your having the same exact problem as me....I just recently bought euro force and armored fury after quiting for like 6 or 7 months...But something was up with my shaders or something so i just uninstalled bf2....So i install bf2 and checked if it worked and it did...but when i try to install the latest patches it always stops and says PATCH FAILED....and after that i cant play bf2 anymore....which sucks cause i spent 20 bucks of the booster packs.....Ive already tried deleting my documents bf2 files...and ive already tried installing everything on safe mode and went trough how many different patch downloads and ended up with those same words PATCH FAILED!!!....

Just for shits and giggles, get yourself a copy of memtest86 to test your RAM and run it overnight from a bootable CD you created yourself. The .iso-format file can be downloaded here.
