I've had this issue for some time now, accually, and just now found a place where somebody will accually read about it on a forum (it always gets ignored).

Goes like this.  If I boot my PC and play BF2 (or a few other games like Vampire the Masqueraide or CnC Generals) and then quit the game, then in the same Windows session try to play it again (or any of the other games with this issue) the PC will lock up and have to be restarted.  Driver versions don't have any effects, nither does patching the software itself.  Does anyone else have this issue and if so how do you fix it?

mine used to do that too for some reason...i found it would work if i ejected the BF2 cd, then reinserted it and chose "Play BF2 Online Now" from the autorun menu.

however, for some reason my computer now plays it fine whenever...so...yeah...i dont know why.

Seems like y'all have a machine just powerful enough to play the game but not robust enough to avoid using the hard drive as a second source of RAM.
