No he doesn't defend terrorists or the methods that they use. What he does argue (passionately argue most of the time) for are the rights of those people. Especially against the continued Israeli actions towards them. He doesn't, and never has, condoned the killing of civilians. I always had a feeling they'd be able to do something like this. I figured they'd put a bomb in their bag that they checked and have a detonator and detonate it from the cabin. Just a fear I ALWAYS had. This is a bit similar to it. I'm just glad they caught it in time.
