I've played the piano for 14 years.  I've specialized in jazz improvisation, and I've picked up a Diana Krall/Harry Connick Jr. style.  When not doing that, I enjoy classical improvisation and can play modern songs in the style of a few different composers.

I've mastered the Moonlight Sonata asagio sostenuto movement, and it will be one of my life's goals to learn the Rach 3...I'll be doing that much later in life, though.

A Guitar and Piano is just a musical instrument as a French Horn or a Saxophone or Even a Tuba.   To Kessel you have the right point.   Those that say that they aren't a instrument then what are they?   Because last time I checked the dictionary -

gui·tar    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (g-tär) n.  -   A musical instrument having a large flat-backed sound box, a long fretted neck, and usually six strings, played by strumming or plucking.

So, you marching band bashers are just as much a Band geek as we are.

I played the French Horn and Saxophones in High School.

Nobody's bashing your instruments stenzel, they're bashing the fact that you get all dressed up and parade around in your fancy clothes.

I don't care about it anymore I was just making a point that they are band geeks just as much as everyone else that plays in a band.   Even those that play instruments for today's Top Artists are band geeks.  I know where you are coming from Chitty.  I am just making a point.  That is all.  I know no one is bashing but I thought it was funny that they say a guitar is not a instrument...LOL.  We have guys playing Guitars for Marching competitions.

come on guys stop bashing on instruments. I hate people that state that their instrument is more leet than other ones. Give respect to those who are good with musical instruments, whatever they are. Playing well is hard and that should deserve some respect.

edit : the post was dedicated to anyone that says that a marching band is gay, but also to the creator of the thread, who says that a guitar or a piano is not respectable.

I didn't say that my instrument was more elite then the other one.  I was just noting how those that play the guitar can bash the marching band and yet they are playing a musical instrument also.  They play infront of others like we did.

Ironic that while you're accusing everyone else of being a douche bag, you're the one resorting to profanity and name calling.

our first song is 160, our other one is 84/100/96(?)  and our last is in 2/2 and half note equals 132.  so thats 264 if quarter note equals 1 beat (4/4). then it goes to 144 (4/4)
sorry i dont speak band fag......... can someone please translate?

Tactile instruments are so old school. Soft-Synths, Samplers and Software studios for the win!

Also did someone just say a marching band works at 175BPM??? That's in Drum n Bass territory and therefore seems a little unlikely!

I can't really play any instrument well, but I'm fairly good with Synthesizers; I love the Polysix.

It can be done, but its never back to back.  Normally you have an opener followed by a ballad, followed by either the closer or another medium to fast song, then the closer, depending on how much time your circuit allows on the field.

I played french horn and trumpet, with a little bit of bass.

I marched mellophone because marching french horns suck.  The mouthpiece bore of a french horn is not suited to field movement.

Guitar and Piano are real instruments - they can be a damn site harder to play than most intruments, (at least when your fingers ar cold they are.) It's just that they're 'common' instruments. That dosn't mean that they're any easier to play.

I play Guitar, Bass, Piano, Drums and a bit of Violin and Pan Pipes. I was the front man in a band too, (Guitar/Vox.) I consider myself a Musician rather than an Instrumentalist, but they both fit.

I've never marched a show where the average step was actually 8 to 5.

our first song is 160, our other one is 84/100/96(?)  and our last is in 2/2 and half note equals 132.  so thats 264 if quarter note equals 1 beat (4/4). then it goes to 144 (4/4)
It may be in 2/2, but I doubt you are marching the quarter notes. If it is written in 2/2, then its' tempo is in 2/2. I could pick any random song, like Whitacre's Lux Arumque, (awesome song by the way, either in its' original choral arrangement or the instrumentalized version) which is written at 54 odd beats per minuite, and subdivide it into sixteenth notes. Then it would be 216bpm.

Marching using concert french horns is a good way to mess up your right wrist, if you hold it the right way.

Marching using marching french horns is dumb, because they still use a french horn mouthpiece. Mellophones use thier own, which are more like trumpet mouthpieces, but a little shorter.
